Santo Tomás is a small town in Peru . It is the capital of the province of Chumbivilcas , is located at approx. 3650 m above sea level and had 10,170 inhabitants in 2017. Ten years earlier the population was 7,575. The town charter Santo Tomás received on 21 June 1825 the place is, however, already much older.

The city is 360 kilometers from the regional capital Cusco , which corresponds to eight hours by car, and 1500 kilometers from the regional capital Lima . The area is of volcanic origin. The Río Santo Tomás , left tributary of the Río Apurímac , flows west of the city. The river and its tributaries have cut deeply into the landscape, which together with the few bridges leads to complicated traffic conditions. Electricity and telephone lines have only been available in Santo Tomás since 1997. There is only one poorly equipped hospital.

The whole region is dominated by agriculture and little developed. There are two primary schools with 700 and 1200 students and a secondary school with 1500 students. Nevertheless, the illiteracy rate among young people is over 50% (as of 2003).

A regional program “Radio Santo Tomás” is broadcast from the parish office, in which many volunteer editors are involved in an open program. It should be noted that information about the radio is one of the most important sources of information in this inhospitable region.

church

The church of Santo Tomás dates from 1789. It took 40 years to build. The church has a cruciform floor plan with its own altars in the north and south transepts . The two towers at the north portal have three small bells and one large bell dedicated to the Mater Dolorosa . The arches of the church are carved in stone depicting flowers and saints. There are figures of saints in the niches of the interior. The altar is covered with sheet silver. The interior of the whole church has been decorated with painted carvings, the pulpit in particular protrudes.

The parish of St. Laurentius Hemsbach maintains a partnership with the parish of Santo Tomás, in which the entire province of Chumbivilcas is involved.

Festivals

On the feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th, besides the masses, typical bullfights take place in Santo Tomas .
