Sarah Sellers (* 10. July 1991 as Sarah Callister ) is an American long-distance runner . She surprisingly came second in the Boston Marathon in 2018 .

Life

Sarah Sellers attended Ogden High School in Ogden, Utah until 2009 . She then studied nursing from 2009 to 2012 at Weber State University in Ogden, for whose university sports team she also ran during this period. She was able to win a total of nine times at the Big Sky Conference . She ran her personal best over 10,000 meters of 32: 51.17 minutes in April 2012. Sellers graduated with the best possible grade point average ( GPA ) of 4.0. After that she attended as a graduate school , the Barry University in Miami Shores ( Florida ).

As a senior in college , Sellers suffered a stress fracture in her foot. As a result, she was suspended for a year and only started running again in Florida to keep fit. According to her coach, it will take three years to fully recover from the injury. 2017 closed Sellers her studies and then began full time as a nurse anesthesia ( Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist ) in a university hospital in Tucson ( Arizona to work). In September 2017 Sellers made her marathon debut at the Huntsville Marathon and won in a time of 2:44:27 h.

On April 16, 2018, she started the Boston Marathon , originally hoping to finish in the top 15 and qualify for the Olympic Trials . The race was dominated by wind, rain and freezing temperatures, the coldest at the Boston Marathon in 30 years. During the course of the race, many of the favorites dropped out or lost a lot of speed despite a relatively slow first half (1:19:41 h). Sellers was 25th after the half marathon mark in 1:22:05 h and from then on was able to steadily make up positions: at kilometer 35 she was already in 13th place, on the next five kilometers she made up ten more places by it passed, among others, Olympic medalist Shalane Flanagan , the two-time world champion Edna Kiplagat and the American national record holder Molly Huddle . She finally reached the finish completely unexpectedly in second, about four minutes behind winner Desiree Linden in a time of 2:44:04 h.

In November 2018, Sellers improved her best time of eighteenth in the New York City Marathon to 2:36:37 h.
