Satsuma ( Japanese さ つ ま 町 , - chō ) is a Japanese city in the Satsuma district of the same name . It is located in Kagoshima Prefecture on the southernmost of the Japanese main islands, Kyushu .
restructuring
Various restructuring measures have been carried out in Kagoshima Prefecture since 2004 . In March 2005 , the towns of Miyanojo and Tsuruda with a total of about 22,000 inhabitants were added to Satsuma . The cities of Sendai , Hiwaki , Iriki , Kedoin and Togo , as well as some surrounding villages, were merged to form the new city of Satsumasendai in 2004 . Satsuma County does not appear to be planned after the restructuring, but it has not yet been completed.
history
Before the abolition of the feudal system in the Meiji Restoration , Satsuma was the capital of Satsuma Province and the Shimazu- ruled Han Satsuma . With the introduction of the modern prefecture system and the associated incorporation into Kagoshima, Satsuma then lost its importance.
In the middle of the 19th century, the mandarin-like citrus fruit, Unshū Mikan, was exported from Satsuma to the USA and has since been called Satsuma in western countries.
