SATU (also SATUO or SATUOeiras ), spelled out Sistema Automático de Transporte Urbano , is an urban transport system in Paço de Arcos , in the Oeiras district in Portugal. The route runs from the Paço de Arcos train station ( Linha de Cascais ) to the Fórum - the shopping center at Parque dos Poetas . It was inaugurated on June 7, 2004 and is 1.15 kilometers long. Extensions are planned up to the connection to the Agualva-Cacém train station ( Linha de Sintra ).

expansion

SATU carriage and rail

The current route of the first section stretches from the historic center of Paço de Arcos to the shopping center in Oeiras Parque (Estação do Forum), with a stop in Tapada do Mocho (Tapada station). The expansion to the Lagoas Park in Porto Salvo is planned in the 2nd phase . With a third construction phase expected for the future, the connection via the Taguspark to the train station of Agualva-Cacém is planned to connect the Linha de Sintra with the Linha de Cascais.

Travel times

The SATU runs daily between 8:00 a.m. and 00:30 a.m. The maximum duration of a trip is four minutes. In times of less use, a passenger can start the train like a lift as soon as a ticket has been purchased.

Technical specifications

The viaduct at Tapada

The train consists of two non-motorized cabins with a capacity of 74 standing and 8 seats and runs without a crew. Like a cable tram, it is driven by an electric motor in the base station that pulls the train forward centrally. He drives on two tracks in a track bed, which are in a viaduct made of concrete and reaches a top speed of 40 km / h. The line is a single-track railway. Technically, it is listed in the APM (automatic people mover) category.

history

The SATU project was approved in 2002 during Isaltino Morais's tenure as District Administrator of Oeiras, after being completed during Teresa Zambujo's tenure . It was realized after an agreement between the district and the Teixeira Duarte company . SATUOEIRAS - Sistema Automático de Transporte Urbano, EM was founded with a 51% share of the Oeiras County and a 49% share of the company. The investments for the first construction phase amounted to 23 million euros.

The start of construction for the second section should have already started. The main interest in this is the company Teixera Duarte, which operates the Lagoas Park office park , and expects better transport connections through the connection to the railway.

The council of the city of Oeiras is currently negotiating a takeover of the share of Teixera Duarte, since the construction company is in liquidity problems and the city wants to start the second phase of construction. However, there is a split opinion in the Camara Municipal.

In 2007 the sales of SATUOEIRAS - Sistema Automático de Transporte Urbano, EM amounted to 243,000 euros, which corresponds to a 19% increase in the number of passengers and 14% of the sales.

The Câmaras of Oeiras and Sintra signed a cooperation protocol in July 2009, in which it was stated that negotiations should also be conducted with the European Investment Bank in order to apply for state funds as well as European Union funds to build the connection between the cities.

criticism

The implementation of the project was anything but peaceful. Despite the advantages, residents of the Tapada do Mocho district in particular complain about the noise and that the route is too close to the windows, casts shadows on the buildings, as well as the loss of the sea view, the destruction of green areas and the infestation of pigeons which the station represents a refuge. Since the train sometimes runs without passengers, it is also known as the ghost train. Added to this are the protests of the opposition council members due to high maintenance costs with simultaneous low utilization. In this critique of the district answered Isaltino Morais that the SATU with completion of the second construction phase, even the Lagoas Park breakeven would reach.
