São Marcos is a former Portuguese parish in the Lisbon District and Lisbon Region . The community had 17,187 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). It is one of the four former parishes of the city of Agualva-Cacém in the district of Sintra . As the name suggests, the evangelist Mark is the patron of the city.

Until 2001, São Marcos was a village in the municipality of Agualva-Cacém in the district of Sintra. The place was at the southernmost end of the municipality, and below the district boundary (directly at the municipality of Porto Salvo in the Oeiras district ).

In July 2001 the municipality of Algualva-Cacém was dissolved and divided into four new municipalities, including that of São Marcos. In the same month the Cidade ( Eng .: city ) Algualva-Cacém was founded, in which the four new municipalities became urban districts.

With the territorial reform of September 29, 2013 , São Marcos and Cacém merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias do Cacém e São Marcos .

The municipality of São Marcos is the second largest municipality within the city and is geographically furthest from the center.

Description: In purple a silver wavy bar with a blue central bar above which there is a golden lion of St. Mark and a silver gear wheel below . A silver three-tower wall crown above the coat of arms . The coat of arms motto as the city name under the shield base on a silver ribbon in black capital letters “S. MARCOS SINTRA ”.
