history

In 1979, Hans Roth and his wife Margret Roth founded Roth Umwelt GmbH. Later the name was changed to "Saubermacher" and the first waste disposal contracts for East Styrian communities were concluded. At the beginning of the 1980s, Saubermacher expanded the catchment area into Southern and Upper Styria and Lower Austria . With the first filling station disposal in Austria in 1984 and the introduction of a separate collection for infectious hospital waste in 1985, the company made a name for itself as a waste disposal company. In 1985 it presented the first mobile sewage sludge injection and sewage sludge treatment plant .

In 1986, the first sewer flushing and suction truck followed throughout Austria, as well as the introduction of the 3-ton system - the separation of waste materials into glass, paper and residual waste - in Mureck and its expansion to the BioPaG system (separation into organic waste, paper and glass). At the end of the 1980s, Austria's first sewer television system and the first recycling of fluorescent lamps followed. With the introduction of the oil alarm emergency number, 24-hour support was also set up for emergencies. In addition, Austria's first refrigerator disposal facility was introduced.

In the years 1990 to 1993, Saubermacher founded the subsidiaries Saubermacher Slovenia, Saubermacher Hungary and Saubermacher Czech Republic. At the same time, the company brought a natural compost to the market. In 1991, the recycling company opened the first chemical-physical plant in Graz for the treatment of hazardous waste. With the introduction of the first waste weighing vehicle in Austria, it was possible for the first time to bill the waste according to the originator.

As a partner of the working group for packaging waste and of ARO and AGR , Saubermacher contributed to the systematic collection and from 1993 to the implementation of the new Austrian packaging ordinance. With the "Hartberger Saubermacher", the first public private partnership was founded in 1992 , in which municipalities and a privately run company work together in a jointly operated company. In the same year, Saubermacher was the first waste management company in Austria to receive the ISO 9002 quality certificate . The company also entered the Viennese market with the takeover of Altstoffrecycling Wien and Rudolf Beck & Söhne GmbH and their integration into Saubermacher Dienstleistungs AG.

In 2001, the subsidiary Saubermacher Outsourcing GmbH was founded in Graz. Other joint ventures with municipalities have existed in Mödling and Villach since 2000 and 2001 . In 2001, a landfill was set up together with the city in Kecskemét , Hungary . In 2002, a waste treatment center was opened in Lenart, Slovenia . In 2003, PUP-Saubermacher doo, the first foreign public-private partnership, was founded in Velenje in Slovenia.

With ThermoTeam, a cooperation between Lafarge Zementwerke and Saubermacher, the first plant for the production of substitute fuels opened in Retznei in southern Styria in 2003 . Here, around 100,000 tonnes of high-quality substitute fuel are produced annually from energy-rich waste, which is mainly used in the neighboring Lafarge cement plant in Retznei. In 2004 a splitting plant was opened in Vienna. The modern plant primarily treats commercial waste and now also produces valuable substitute fuel. With the takeover of Rumpold, a disposal company for hazardous waste, in 2006, Saubermacher became the largest private company in Austrian waste management. In 2007 a new high-tech sorting plant for light packaging waste was opened at the Graz location. After winning a Europe-wide tender, the West Styrian cleaner was founded in the same year.

In 2010, UBS Global Asset Management was able to win an international financial investor for further expansion. The fund still holds around 28% in Roth Privatstiftung, the remaining 72% are family-owned. In March 2011, the Saubermacher headquarters was relocated to the new company headquarters, the so-called ECOPORT, in Feldkirchen near Graz.

Since January 2014, Saubermacher has been helping to shape modern waste and resource management in the Middle East as part of a joint venture with West Coast Cleaning and Environmental Services Company LLC in Abu Dhabi . At the beginning of 2015, Saubermacher acquired the majority share and then in June 2016 100% of the German company REDUX, market leader in the sorting, processing and recycling of lithium-ion batteries and conventional batteries.

Since 2015 the company has focused its activities u. a. on digital innovations for even more individual customer solutions and waste intelligence. In the same year wastebox.at, an online shop for private individuals, and the home service app were launched. The app enables quick communication between municipalities and citizens, provides information about collection dates and at the same time represents a communication platform for tradespeople, clubs, schools and co. Just one year later, the company developed an innovative app and platform for construction site disposal in just nine months : wastebox.biz. The digital application revolutionized construction site disposal and within a very short time became Austria's largest construction site disposal company without owning a vehicle. In the same year, the company opened a new processing plant for old electrical devices in St. Michael, Styria. In 2017, a new recycling center was opened in Kidricevo, Slovenia, and the modern storage and treatment center for hazardous waste in Vienna went into operation. A year later, Saubermacher started an international expansion course together with Veolia and rolled out wastebox.biz on the German and French markets. In the same year, the subsidiary REDUX opened a new high-tech recycling plant for lithium-ion batteries at its Bremerhaven location and, together with Interseroh, founded the SIMPli RETURN joint venture, which is considered the first global recycling system for lithium-ion batteries. Further milestones were the opening of the modern recycling plant for cooling devices in the Czech Republic, the expansion of the high-tech plastic sorting plant at the Graz location in Puchstrasse and the opening of the new treatment plant for industrial and commercial wastewater in Trofaiach. With the relaunch of the service app at home, Saubermacher also created additional “smart” advantages for communities and citizens. As a leader in waste intelligence, in 2018 Saubermacher also presented the digital project “Smart Waste” in cooperation with Energie Steiermark, in which intelligent garbage cans and modern recyclable scanners are used for the first time. In autumn 2018, GRESB (Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark) recognized Saubermacher as the most sustainable waste management company in the world. The EU environment ministers took this great success as an opportunity at the informal Council of Environment Ministers in Graz to pay Saubermacher a visit to the Puchstrasse location. They found out about innovative processing methods and digital solutions in the recycling industry from the environmental pioneer.

In 2019, the company set a new recycling standard and invested in the new high-tech system of its subsidiary ThermoTeam for the production of substitute fuels. Together with the Naturschutzbund, the "Blooming and humming meadows" campaign was launched, an initiative that promotes the habitat of native wild and honey bees, butterflies and insects. In the summer, the company won the TRIGOS Steiermark 2019 in the climate protection category. Furthermore, Saubermacher drew attention to itself with a new, in Austria unique recycling system for waste bins. For the first time, containers made of 100% recycled material are being used. The Saubermacher "Ökobins" are produced in cooperation with the Carinthian company Europlast and consist almost entirely of the recyclate of old waste collection bins. In the same year, the successful digital project "Smart Waste" was further expanded in cooperation with the Lower Austrian municipalities. Since then, Saubermacher has been running a project for a modern, sustainable waste glass collection in the Horn district. In the Tulln region, an intelligent recyclable material scanner is used, which uses sensors to determine the separation quality. In autumn 2019, Saubermacher was once again named the most sustainable waste management company in the world by GRESB.

Foreign markets

Numerous locations in six countries are managed from Graz as separate companies and 62 holdings.

In Hungary , where Saubermacher was already present shortly after the fall of the Iron Curtain , Saubermacher generated around 40 million euros in sales with 700 Hungarian employees. The market became critical due to legal provisions according to which the government under Viktor Orbán had plans to nationalize waste disposal. For this reason, Saubermacher has intervened with other waste disposal companies in the EU .

Hans Roth Saubermacher environmental award

In order to promote the exchange between science, business, technology and environmental protection, the Hans Roth Saubermacher Environmental Prize, endowed with 3,500 euros each, has been awarded annually at five Austrian universities ( Montanuniversität Leoben , Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz , TU Vienna , University for Bodenkultur Wien , University of Innsbruck ) advertised and awarded. Since 2012, particularly innovative theses from universities in Slovenia have been honored. Young researchers are honored for outstanding diploma theses or dissertations related to environmental protection and waste management. Special emphasis is placed on concrete suggestions and methods as well as originality and practicality for implementation and their economic benefits in everyday life.
