The 29-year-old Chinese-born New Yorker Wilhelmina Pang is single and works as a doctor. Her family puts pressure on her to marry. Wilhelmina meets Vivian Shing, whose father is the head of the hospital she works at. The women get closer and begin a lesbian relationship.

Wilhelmina's mother Hwei-Lan Gao becomes pregnant, which she surprises her family with. She refuses to name the child's father. Her father throws her out of the apartment, whereupon she moves in with Wilhelmina. Wilhelmina is looking for an educated husband of Chinese origin for her. She finds an apparently suitable candidate in the person of Stimson Cho, but gives up her plan when she realizes that her mother loves another man.

Shing leaves Pang, who fears the relationship could become public, and travels to Paris . Wilhelmina's mother is committed to the couple's reconciliation, whereupon Wilhelmina kisses her lover publicly at a party.

Reviews

David Rooney wrote in Variety magazine that the warm-hearted romantic comedy had engaging characters and amusing situations that would prevail over the lack of energy. You successfully build a "fragile bridge" between traditional values and the independent spirit. Some twists and turns are predictable, but in the end the film is satisfactory.

The lexicon of international film wrote that the film was a "stylishly staged, convincingly staged comedy". He suggests “soft tones” and recalls Ang Lee's wedding banquet from 1992. The film juggles “skillfully” “with problems that the first and second generation Chinese have with one another”, places “traditions next to adaptation” and promotes "For understanding for Americans of Chinese descent who are committed to their roots".
