At 904  m, the Schützenberg is the sixth highest independent mountain in the Thuringian Forest . It is located near the Rennsteig , southwest of the town of Oberhof in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district .

The surrounding area

Despite its proximity to Oberhof, its height and a prominence of at least around 80 m - in dominance and prominence it exceeds z. B. the Schneekopf clearly - the Schützenberg is not one of the most famous mountains in the Thuringian Forest. This is not least due to the fact that the main ridge along the Rennsteig from Schützenberg northwest is hardly broken up into individual peaks and in many places it reaches around 900 m.

Immediately to the west of the summit, the Kerbsohlental of the Schwarza - or Schönau -Oberlaufes Haselbach , the so-called Kanzlersgrund , separates a second, more southerly ridge, also branching off from the Schützenberg, the summits of which reach similar heights and through significantly deeper dividing notches (notch heights of up to 140 m ) appear much more independent than the Rennsteig summit. Some of them are well-known excursion destinations, not least because of the better view to the southwest.

The following peaks are worth mentioning:
(each section is preceded by the distance from Schützenberg along with the direction and height of the respective notch above sea level)

  • Main ridge (north of the Kanzlersgrund)
    • + 2.6 km NW ↓ 837.2  mGreifenberg ( 901  m )
    • + 1.4 km WSW ↓ approx. 867  mBrand ( 900.9  m )
      • 0.6 km SW ↓ 891.9  mFinsterbachkopf ( 898.3  m )
      • 1.8 km NW ↓ 872  mDonnershauk ( 893  m )
    • + 6.2 km WNW ↓ 815.4  mSchmalkalder Loibe ( 886  m )
  • Side ridge (south of the bottom)

To the south, the mountain peak ( 881.5  m ) is only 3 km away, but clearly separated by the Lichtenau valley (the upper course is also called Lübenbach here ), which falls between the two mountains to around 627  m ( Lübenbach settlement ), while the south-east is Landscape beyond the 825.2  m high notch at the intersection between Rennsteig and the former B 247 gradually to Pfanntalskopf (1.7 km, 867.8  m ) and Brandleite (2.2 km, 878.9  m ) to finally the Großer Beerberg (5.4 km, 982.9  m ) increases.

Individual evidence

  1. Map services of the BfN 1: 5000
  2. Not included are the peripheral peaks of the Großer Beerberg Wildekopf ( 943  m ) and Sommerbachskopf ( 941  m ) as well as those of the Schneekopf Teufelskkreis ( 967  m ), Fichtenkopf ( 944  m ) and Sachsenstein ( 914  m ), each with a notch height of less than 25 m exhibit.
  3. Map services of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation ( information )
  4. The path over the highest possible notch between Schützenberg and Gebranntem Stein has the shape of a semicircle open to the north, whereby the notch represents a very narrow ridge.
