The Schambach is a brook less than 4 km long in the Franconian Jura , which flows into the Altmühl from the right and south near Arnsberg in the municipality of Kipfenberg in the Eichstätt district . It is the middle of three Altmühl tributaries with this name. His valley is the Arnsberger Schambachtal .

course

The main source of the Schambach is located south of the Kipfenberg district of Schambach at about 388  m above sea level. NHN next to the district road from Böhmfeld in the south to Arnsberg (EI 10) at the end of a wide and dry upper valley, which can be followed in two branches to the southeast in two branches up to the vicinity of Böhmfeld. There is a parking lot a little south of the source, which flows into a watercourse that begins about half a kilometer further up the valley at the foot of the road that climbs the fork spur. From this point onwards, the course moves consistently northwards with smaller swings. The brook loops in it through a flat floodplain, from which a few short ditches run towards it. Shortly before the village of Schambach in the valley , it passes the Hintermühle, then the village itself, immediately afterwards Loh- and Petermühle, further down the Forster- and Böllermühle. Shortly thereafter, after about 3.7 km of running from the right and south, the Schambach flows to about 370  m above sea level. NN in the Altmühl .

On the constantly water-bearing section, the stream initially follows the municipal boundary from Böhmfeld to Markt Kipfenberg and changes over to the Kipfenberg area before the main spring inflow. On the lower reaches of the last kilometer, the community of Walting borders the left bank.

Catchment area

At 41.9 km², the Schambach has a fairly large surface catchment area in the karstified southern Franconian Alb for its length . It has roughly the contour of a conical wedge tapering north to the mouth, a length of about 7.5 km and a base width of about 9 km in the south. In the northern area there are longer dry valleys to the Altmühl beyond the left watershed, shorter beyond the right. The noticeably larger part of the watershed on the northeast side, however, is bordered by the catchment area of the Birkalbach , which reaches the Altmühl a little downhill in Kipfenberg, also on a northern course. The outlying area in the south drains via the Manterinbach and its receiving waters southeast to the Danube . In front of the western watershed lie the dry valley system of the Pfünzer valley , which tapers northwards to the Altmühl above near Pfünz , and which also only has permanent drainage near the Altmühl with the short Pfünz .

The highest three elevations in the catchment area are all on watersheds. In the Waltinger Schlag in the northwest, the terrain is on the slope at up to about 530  m above sea level. NN . The top of the Steinberg near Biberg on the northeastern sheath reaches 520  m above sea level. NN , the Eichelberg on the southeast corner near Schelldorf 519  m above sea level. NN .

More than two thirds of the area is forested. The open areas are mainly in the south-west around Böhmfeld , which lies entirely within, and on the north-east side around Attenzell , of which the smaller part falls towards the Birken valley, and around Schelldorf, which is again entirely this side. The corridors in the downward valley are only narrow, the settlement in them is limited to the places mentioned in the course, but without Arnsberg, which is already completely in the Altmühltal.
