The Scheideckpass , rarer Scheideggpass , at 543  m above sea level. NHN in the southern Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg connects Kandern with the Schlächtenhaus district, which belongs to Steinen . The pass road (L135) running in an east-west direction is around 8.5 kilometers long. The top of the pass is located on the western edge of the municipality of Kandern. In the course of the Baden Revolution , the pass was the scene of the battle on the Scheideck on April 20, 1848 .

At the eastern end of Kandern, the west ramp to Scheideck branches off from the main road (Kreisstraße 6350) towards Malsburg-Marzell after around 150 meters. It leads over almost completely wooded area in 5.2 kilometers up to the pass. It overcomes a difference in altitude of 201 meters, which corresponds to an average gradient of 3.8%. The maximum gradient of 8% is reached briefly at the beginning of the ramp. In the upper half the gradient is very moderate, at about 100 meters the road even runs with a slight gradient. In the upper third of the pass, the pass road runs north of the farm and the settlement of the Christian Christopherus community. The road has three hairpin bends in this section . About 150 meters before the pass, the county road 6309 branches off to Endenburg .

The pass height is on a curved section at 543  m above sea level. NHN and is located on the district area belonging to Kandern. There is a small parking lot for hikers there.

The east ramp leads down from the pass in 3.3 kilometers to Schlächtenhaus, 168 meters in altitude. This corresponds to an average gradient of 5.1%; the maximum is 10%. In the upper third of the east ramp, the street leads past the courtyard. The path is partly straight, partly in curves, there are no switchbacks. The east ramp leads over almost completely unforested area; only the section at the pass is in the forest.

history

In the course of the March Revolution , on the morning of April 20, 1848, during the Baden Revolution, a battle took place between the troops of Commander-in-Chief Friedrich Hecker and the Baden and Hessian federal troops. In the battle there were 1,200 men on the part of the irregulars and 2,200 on the side of the federal troops.

Today a plaque on the Scheideckpass commemorates the events and a memorial stone to the fallen General Friedrich von Gagern and the ten other fallen in the battle. To commemorate the events, the battle on the Scheideck was re-enacted with costumed actors in spring 2018.

In addition to an individual journey to the Scheideckpass, regular lines of the Südbadenbus operate . There is a stop right at the pass.

From the Luckepass in the south- west , the “Hohe Straße” hiking trail leads 10.1 kilometers along the mountain ridge over the Wittlinger Höhe to the Scheideckpass, overcoming 270 meters in altitude.

nature

In terms of nature, the forest area around the Scheideck belongs to the Röttler Forest and is therefore a fauna-flora-habitat (FFH) area . On the west ramp to the pass, less than a kilometer from the beginning of the L135, there is a tree monument . At the roadside is a Douglas fir planted by August Freiherr Teuffel von Birkensee in 1879 , which has a height of 57 meters and a circumference of 4.08 meters. A wooden plaque on the trunk indicates the particularity of the tree.

From the Scheideck forest car park, following the hiking trail in a south-westerly direction, you come along the Hohe Straße to the “Röttler Wald” forest .
