Location of Schildhorst in Lower Saxony

Schildhorst is a village in the state of Lower Saxony . It has been a district of Winzenburg since 1974 , which in turn has belonged to the municipality of Freden (Leine) since 2016 . The place is located in the Leinebergland southeast of Alfeld .

Geography and history

Adjacent nature parks are the Harz Mountains and the Weser Uplands .

Schildhorst is surrounded by forests, which allow longer hikes and excursions all year round. The long-distance hiking trail E 11 ( Harz - Netherlands ) leads directly through the village. On the E 11 one reaches the health resort Bad Gandersheim in a southerly direction via the Helleberg and in a northerly direction the former district town of Alfeld. The surrounding former castles Burg Hausfreden , Winzenburg and Hohe Schanze (today only remnants of the ramparts or ruins) offer interesting hiking destinations . Cross-country skiing is possible in snowy winters.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Schildhorst was known for its glassworks , which u. a. made white glass. Because of the abundant wood, water and mineral deposits, the location was very well suited for glass production. In the 20th century there was only a sawmill , a cheese dairy and insignificant remains of the glassworks.
