The Ratibor Castle is a hunting lodge in Roth in Middle Franconia . It is located at the southern end of Rother Hauptstrasse and has an inner courtyard and a small park. Georg the Pious , Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach , had it built in 1535–1537.

history

The castle was built in the style of the German early Renaissance , but also has some late Gothic style elements. The construction was mainly financed by income from the Upper Silesian dual principality Opole - Ratibor , which was pledged to the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach in 1532–1551. The name Ratibor Castle on the Retzet ( Rednitz ) is derived from the royal seat of Ratibor .

In 1791, with the abdication of the last Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach, the factory owner Johann Philipp Stieber bought the building and installed a factory for Leonese goods there . From 1858 the district court was housed in a wing.

From 1892 to 1916, Wilhelm von Stieber had large parts of the building redesigned in the late Renaissance style by artists such as Ferdinand Wagner , Rudolf von Seitz , Friedrich Wanderer and Conradin Walther , for example the state hall with ceiling paintings from ancient mythology and tapestries with scenes from the Odyssey .

In 1942 the castle was given to the city of Roth as a gift. It has been used in a variety of ways since then. The city library and the meeting room of the city council are housed in the former stables, the city museum on the second floor of the wing that spans the courtyard and the city tourist information office on part of the ground floor . The main building houses the city archive. In summer the inner courtyard is used for the performance of the castle courtyard games.

In 2006 and 2007 the facade and parts of the interior were completely renovated.

By 2015, the former council chambers were renovated and converted into event rooms. Since then, these have been used for weddings and representative events in the city.
