history
The castle was built at the beginning of the 13th century by the Lords of Mässingen, Ministeriale of the Counts of Hirschberg , first mentioned in 1068 and first mentioned in 1281. The castle was the administrative seat and served to protect the trade route that passed through the Schwarzachtal.
Berthold von Mässingen, who remained childless, bequeathed the castle and the village of Obermässing to the Teutonic Order in 1285 , who set up a commandery belonging to the Ballei Franken here. In 1465 Prince-Bishop Wilhelm von Reichenau acquired the castle for the Eichstätt Monastery, set up his summer residence here, a maintenance office in Obermässing and in 1490 had the fortifications of the castle reinforced with a new curtain wall and 5 corner towers.
During the German Peasants' War in 1525 the “Mässinger Haufe” took the castle and plundered it without destroying it. In 1670 the castle was converted into a residential palace by Prince-Bishop Marquard and after the secularization of 1803 the castle came into private ownership, was partially demolished and used as a quarry. Even today, several buildings of the castle complex are still inhabited, and several residential houses and agricultural buildings were also built in the complex. Around 2000, renovation work began by the Association for Culture and Home Care Greding e. V.
