At the site of today's castle there was probably a small wooden defense structure as early as the 11th century, which was probably administered by followers of the Eppensteiner . At that time, the Eppensteiners also owned a large part of the surrounding area. The first documentary mention of the "villa Sedinge" took place in 1103, when the Carinthian Duke Heinrich III. donated the fortification to St. Lambrecht Abbey . The St. Lambrecht Abbey exchanged the property in 1147 with the Rein Abbey for other properties. The Rein Abbey had previously owned another property in Söding from King Konrad III. received and used Groß-Söding as a farmyard for the two combined goods.

In the course of the 14th century, the property came to the Stadecker . In 1369 Hans von Stadeck left the Mert estate to the Perner, one of his servants, whose descendants named themselves after the Söding estate. The Neuburger family acquired Groß-Söding in the 15th century. In the course of the Quart raised in 1529 to finance the Turkish wars , the property went to Wolfgang Staiger, who came from Graz, and his family. Gotthard Schober began expanding the courtyard into a castle in 1563. After him there were frequent changes of ownership, so Groß-Söding belonged to Wilhelm von Gleisbach in 1567 and Erasmus Neuburger in 1629. In 1591 a truce at Groß-Söding is mentioned, the extent of which is not further described. Christina Neuburger, a native of Staiger, sold the castle to Sebald Roll on October 25, 1632. From 1665 wholesale Söding was as Fideikommissherrschaft in the family basement of Kellersperg. The family enlarged the rulership in 1671 by joining their Altenberg rulership and in 1784 by joining the Winterhof rulership and the gilt Rollau . At the end of the 18th century, 116 subordinate houses belonged to 32 parishes and three offices. In the second half of the 18th century, the Kellersperg family had the castle heavily redesigned, which partly took the form of a new building. Ernst zu Kellersperg leased the castle briefly to Anton von Moscon in 1802 and to Count Joachim von Lengheimb between 1804 and 1810 . During the Second World War, the palace building housed a weaving school. Groß-Söding was owned by the Kellersperg family until 1960 and has belonged to the von Lutz Sparowitz family since 1967 . Part of the palace now houses rental apartments.

The castle is a three-storey block with a hipped roof on a square floor plan, which in its current form dates from the 18th century. At the entrance there is a central building adorned with columns and protruding like a bay . A small baroque roof turret with an onion helmet is located above the central building . In the south there is an extension with a square corner tower. The courtyard is flanked by one and two-story farm buildings newly built around 1800.

Some parts of the original interior have been preserved in the halls and rooms to this day. In 1972, wall paintings from the end of the 17th century were uncovered and restored in the central hall on the upper floor. These show musicians dancing in the manner of the Commedia dell'arte . The castle chapel, built in 1687, is decorated with simultaneous stucco work . The high altar, which was erected by Johann Veit Hauck around 1700, has an altarpiece showing the holy clan . In the 19th century, the remains of frescoes from the then demolished chapel of Graz Castle were brought here. These were painted by Egyd de Rye around 1600 and are now embedded in the chapel walls.
