Dorngraben is a group in western Styria in the municipality of Söding-Sankt Johann in the Voitsberg district , Styria .

Place name and geography

The part of the name Dorn- is derived from the Middle High German dorn for thorn bushes , thorn bush, while the part of the name -graben comes from the Middle High German grabe for ditch , deepening in the ground. The place name means something like thorn bushes in the ground .

Dorngraben is located in the northwest of the municipality of Söding-Sankt Johann, northeast of the main town Sankt Johann ob Hohenburg and northwest of the main town of Söding , in the northern part of the cadastral community Moosing , on a hill between Muggaubach in the west and Packer Straße B 70 in the south.

history

Dorngraben emerged in the 12th or 13th century as a scattered settlement in the high medieval clearing area and consisted of courtyards with block and striped corridors . The first written mention of the place as in Dorngraben took place in 1418.

In the 16th century, the inhabitants of the place belonged partly to the Dornegg dominion . For the year 1542, several Bergholden des Gall and Moritz von Racknitz are documented in Dorngraben . Further mountain Holden were the mining authority Gaisfeld the rule Lankowitz and United Söding . A sheaf and wine ten was with the Premstätten rule , another Christmas in connection with the Dornegg rule was with the Winterhof rule . Dorngraben belonged to the advertising district of the Ligist rule .

Economy and Infrastructure

Dorngraben is dominated by agriculture, with viticulture that has been demonstrable since the 16th century playing an important role.

The local children attend schools in Mooskirchen and Sankt Johann ob Hohenburg .

Sights and buildings

One of the sacred buildings in the village is the Maria Protection Chapel, which was built in 1926 on the site of an old image of the Virgin Mary. In the same year a bell tower was added to the chapel, which carried a bell cast by the Szabo bell foundry in Graz . In 1946 the chapel was enlarged and a new bell tower and a wall structure were added. Since then, it has housed a statue of the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus made by Anton Zenz and serves as a place for May devotions .
