The Scherneck castle is between Rehling and the community town of Au ( Aichach-Friedberg in Schwaben ) northeast of Augsburg on the Lech Leite . In its current form, the building complex largely dates from the 19th century and is managed as an agricultural and forestry estate.

history

Already in 926 a castle of the Lords of Rehling is said to have been on the hill above the Lech Valley . In 1999 the local history researcher Helmut Rischert discovered a presumed predecessor castle "Alt-Scherneck" above the "Schlosskreppen", a ravine north of the castle.

The first secure mention of Scherneck is a purchase contract from 1322, in which Hans von Rehling sold his castle to Heinrich von Gumppenberg . The background of the sale may have been inheritance disputes. At that time, the Rehlinger were probably the Wittelsbach's servants .

Between 1397 and 1411, Hans der Gumppenberger "von Rehling" changed his nickname to "von Scherneck". The old castle was probably abandoned and moved to its current location. The name Scherneck means a "sharp", rugged corner, so it would be better suited to the castle site between the castle and Rehling. The two castle sites are about five minutes' walk from each other.

The Gumppenbergers held the Hofmark Scherneck until the 17th century. In 1626, after the death of Hans Heinrich von Gumppenberg, power came to the Nothaffs von Wernberg via Renate von Gumppenberg . In 1636 Karl Fuchs acquired the property, but in 1640 he moved to his estate in Moravia . The area around Rehling was exposed to numerous looting during the Thirty Years War , as it was near the powerful imperial city of Augsburg. The castle stood empty and was placed under administration in 1642 together with the rest of the Hofmark.

In 1661, Count Felix von Lodron acquired the castle estate. In 1696 the Hofkammerrat Johann Senser was named as the owner. In the same year the barons von Mayer bought the property.

In 1823 Scherneck Castle became the property of the Barons von Schaezler . The banker Johann Lorenz von Schaezler had shortly before (1821) been elevated to the hereditary baron status. The family then began a large-scale renovation and expansion of the entire complex, which included the baroque castle chapel. The current appearance of the castle estate is largely shaped by this conversion. Today the mistress of the castle is Carola Freifrau von Schaezler, widow of the heir to the locksmith, Dr. Christian Siedler Freiherr von Schaezler. The latter was the grandson of Dr. jur. Wolfgang Freiherr von Schaezler - the founder of the Schaezlerpalais to the city of Augsburg. The former summer residence Scherneck has been the main residence of the Schaezler family since the Schaezler Palace was founded.

The brewery began as early as 1719 under the Barons von Mayer. The Bräustüberl, whose beer garden is now a popular excursion destination, was opened in 1820.

Since 2005, the "Scherneck Historical Knight Tournament" has been held annually in June on the "Tournament Meadow" in front of the castle. One of the largest medieval markets in the region has now developed around the tournament arena. In 2007 the first high ropes course opened in a deciduous forest on Schlossberg. In 2013 it was taken over by the Tiefblick company, modernized and reopened as the “Kletterwald Schloss Scherneck”. In 2012 a soccer golf course opened at the foot of Scherneck, which is operated as the Soccerpark Rehling. Own hunting and fishing rights on the Friedberger Ach and the Lech also belong to the castle estate.

description

The castle is located in the forest on the edge of the Lechrain . From the north, a gate tower allows entry into the inner courtyard. The simple main building with its tail gables stands on the west side above the slope. The outbuildings were laid out at an angle in the north and east, the south side is open. Here is a large terrace made of brick masonry.

The two-story main building was built in 1844/45. The courtyard front is accentuated on the courtyard side by a large wrought-iron balcony. The core of the tower in the north dates back to around 1700, but is built into the line of the economic buildings. To the south of the church is the former office building, which, like the main building, is closed off by a tail gable.

Castle Church of St. Matthias and Georg

The west facade of St. Matthias and Georg is structured by pilasters and closed by a curved gable. A simple rectangular portal allows entry, a transverse oval window opening above which a larger round window illuminates the interior.

The single-nave nave is spanned by a needle cap barrel with thin acanthus stucco. The walls are divided by strong protruding pilasters. The west gallery opens into three arched arcades to the nave, the space below is designed as a vestibule. The only slightly drawn-in choir appears round on the inside, but closed on three sides on the outside.

During a restoration in 1979, two wall frescoes with the undressing and crucifixion of Christ were exposed in the choir . The paintings from around 1760/70 are executed in the manner of Ignaz Baldauf . In between there is a moving group of crucifixions on the choir altar (around 1730/40).
