The castle Schlettau in the eponymous town Schlettau on the Zschopau is one of the important monuments at the old Salt Road in the upper Erzgebirge . It is also located on the Silberstraße , which is characterized by the old mining industry, and leads from Schwarzenberg in the direction of Dresden . After complete restoration by 2006, it is now a museum and cultural center.

history

Schlettau Castle probably goes back to a hilltop castle built by the Reichsministeriale von Crimmitschau in the 13th century . The facility protected a passing salt road and was at the same time the administrative center of a small lordship. In the 14th century, the nobles of Schönburg-Crimmitschau were enfeoffed by King Charles IV with the rule of Schlettau from the city and five villages. At the same time, the castle was expanded to include a gothic style palace .

From 1413 to 1536 Schlettau belonged to the Cistercians - Abbey Gruenhain whose abbots expansions in 1500 the palace to the castle. In 1458 Kunz von Schönfels bought Schlettau Castle with his brothers Arnold and Siegmund. After secularization , Schlettau Castle became the property of the Saxon electors in 1536, who used it as a hunting lodge. From 1634 a forest and game management was established here. The structural components that still exist today consist of a Renaissance middle section (approx. 1620) and two baroque wings (beginning of the 18th century) from the time of the electorate. However, the 18th century was characterized by an increasing deterioration of the buildings for reasons of cost. In 1796, the headquarters of the forest and game management department was relocated to Schneeberg and Schlettau Castle was sold to the bourgeoisie.

In 1814 Johann Traugott Lohse acquired the castle and set up a spinning mill here. Under Carl Friedrich Naumann, an agricultural machinery factory was built on the premises from 1885. Between 1885 and 1909 Naumann had the castle restored using neo-Gothic elements.

When the castle was sold to the city of Schlettau in 1931, the industrial period of the castle's use ended and the castle was used as a museum until 1964. Since 1995, the historic buildings have been restored under the leadership of a development association and are now managed and used again as a museum.

The castle and its manor house are surrounded by a romantic park with two ponds. In the museum rooms, the history of the monument and the region is presented with partly lively presentations. A center for forest and game history reminds of the time of the chief forest masters in the castle and motivates people to protect nature . The rich tradition of trimmings and herbal liqueur production in the Ore Mountains is conveyed in show workshops . The " Erzgebirge Landscape Art Collection" offers a unique collection of pictures and graphics from the beautiful Erzgebirge. The diverse cultural offerings include the series “Music and Literature in the Knight's Hall”, the “2000 + 1 Night” festival and other events, especially at Christmas time. Weddings take place in the knight's hall and historic gastronomy in the wine cellar. Some rooms are rented out for private or company events.
