The 140-kilometer Silberstraße holiday route is the first and longest of its kind in Saxony . Against the background of the importance of mining for Saxon history, the road connects the sights and tourist offers that are related to centuries-old mining and metallurgy in the Ore Mountains and the Ore Mountains foreland. Since 2012 it has been marketed as the Saxon-Bohemian Silver Road , with the extension from Annaberg-Buchholz to Ostrov , by the Erzgebirge Tourist Association .

The Erzgebirge has been sustainably shaped by mining for over 800 years and at the beginning in particular by silver mining , its supply industries and trades . It emerged mines , smelters and mints , in turn, to the present day traditions and customs were created. Several technical monuments , especially numerous show mines and several hammer mills in addition to the low mountain range and the still regional way of life in the Ore Mountains led to the development of the holiday route.

Today's holiday route Silberstraße goes u. a. on the historical ore transport routes Silberwagenweg Annaberg-Buchholz - Wolkenstein - Lengefeld - Brand-Erbisdorf - Freiberg and the Silberstraße Scharfenberg - Freiberg and symbolizes the way of silver from the silver mines in the Ore Mountains to the ore processing sites and leads along the historical Fürstenweg through the Tharandt Forest to Dresden in the Green Vault , the treasury of the Wettins .

course

Starting in Zwickau , the Silberstraße leads over the mountain town of Schneeberg , the towns of Aue , Schwarzenberg , the mining towns of Annaberg-Buchholz, Ehrenfriedersdorf , Wolkenstein, Marienberg , Lengefeld, Sayda , Brand-Erbisdorf to Freiberg and from here, via Tharandt and Freital , further into the Saxon state capital Dresden. From Annaberg-Buchholz there is a branch to Ostrov in Bohemia .

The course largely coincides with the lines of the federal highways 93 , 169 , 101 , 171 and 173 as well as the state road S 194. It runs southeast of Zwickau through the village of the same name Silberstraße . Between Annaberg and Lengefeld and between Brand-Erbisdorf and Freiberg it partly corresponds to the course of the so-called Silberwagenweg , an old post and trade route , between Freiberg and Naundorf partly the Silberstraße , which led from Scharfenberg on the Elbe to Freiberg, and runs in the direction of Dresden they also in the course of the historical prince's path through the Tharandt forest. From Zwickau to Dresden, the Silberstraße is accompanied by the Silberstraße cycle path . The junction from Annaberg-Buchholz in the direction of Bohemia follows the old post road on the B 95 in the direction of Karlsbad .

Attractions

The Silberstraße makes numerous objects of the Saxon mining industry accessible to tourism, including for example the teaching and research mines "Reiche Zeche" and "Alte Elisabeth" , the Eisenhammer Dorfchemnitz and the Frohnauer Hammer .

Numerous late Gothic hall churches ( St. Wolfgang's Church , St. Anne's Church , St. Marien , Freiberg Cathedral ), Renaissance buildings and a large number of village churches with works of art of architecture , painting , sculpture and organ building ( Gottfried Silbermann ) bear witness to the former wealth of the mining region.

In addition to the important mineral collections in Freiberg such as terra mineralia , it also opens up the geological open-air museum and the geological hiking trail in the Tharandt Forest, where you can explore almost all geological ages using geological information.

In the former Saxon residence city of Dresden, too, the proceeds from silver mining made a considerable contribution to the establishment of the art collections and the creation of architectural monuments.

The Silberstraße holiday route is a very good introduction to getting to know the Ore Mountains. The street layout is marked with a silver "S" and is partly identical to Deutsche Alleenstraße .

Many events along the Silberstraße holiday route give an insight into mountain parades , Christmas customs and folklore . Of crafts and handicrafts in particular are carving , lace making and the Zinngießen well as producing the world-famous Christmas pyramids , nativity , Nutcrackers , Incense and other wood art to name.
