The Lockwitz Castle Church is essentially a late Gothic, listed sacred building in the Lockwitz district of Dresden . It is the only Evangelical Lutheran church in Dresden that is structurally connected to a castle . The castle church is the main church of the parish of the same name .

history

The history of the castle church probably goes back to the 13th century, when a Catholic chapel already existed in Lockwitz . After the Reformation in 1539, the chapel was closed and was not rediscovered until 1622 by the manor and court marshal Johann Georg von Osterhausen († 1627). He set up a Protestant church in it. In the following year , Lockwitz , which was part of the church in Leubnitz-Neuostra , was given the status of an independent parish. In 1690 privy councilor Gotthelf Friedrich von Schönberg (1631–1708) acquired the Lockwitz manor and initiated a church renovation in the baroque style. It was built between 1699 and 1703. The eastern church tower was demolished and the western castle wing was converted into a church tower. The 37 meter high tower with a baroque dome and lantern created the connection between church and castle. The church is to the east of the castle. In 1930 the church was restored and the east gallery was changed to accommodate an organ. Further renovation work took place in 1952 and from 1993 to 1996. In 2010 the altar was restored. In 2018, the church roof and the entire facade were restored with government funds (monument protection aid), grants from the regional church and donations from the parish and private individuals. The church council André Bockholt took over the patronage of this extensive building project.

Building description

Exterior

The castle church seen from the north

The Lockwitz Castle Church is an elongated plastered building with a gable roof . The main portal is on the north side of the church. It is adorned with the coat of arms of the Schönbergs . Church and castle are connected to the west by the square bell tower with a tent roof .

Interior

The interior has four bays and offers space for around 400 worshipers. The ceiling is flat and has a ribbed vault simulated with wooden paneling . The walls, which are closed on three sides, are occupied by two-storey galleries in the north and south and the organ gallery in the east. In the west, above the crypt, there is also the patron's box with two painted epitaphs . In the east, in front of the organ gallery, is the altar, which was located under the patron s box until the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style. The relocation made it possible to access the patronage box from the palace. The two painted epitaphs for Helene von Haugwitz († 1622) and Hans Georg von Osterhausen († 1627) are in the patronage box.

altar

The sandstone altar dates back to an epitaph from 1627 and was made as an altar around 1660. In the predella there is a communion relief , which is flanked on the side by depictions of the Annunciation and the baptism of Christ . Both representations date from 1823. The main field of the altar is surrounded by two columns made of Maxen marble and shows a crucifixion . Above the entablature there is a depiction of the resurrection of Christ , which is flanked by the figures "Faith", "Hope" and "Love" .

Pulpit and font

The pulpit is made of wood and probably dates back to the late 17th century. The pulpit is wide and decorated with acanthus leaves. The sound cover shows volutes made of foliage.

The church has a pewter baptismal font from 1622 and a wooden baptism from 1823.

organ

The Lockwitz Castle Church has a Jehmlich organ from 1939 with 23 registers and 1284 pipes. The pipes from the predecessor organ by Schröter / Jahn from 1885 were also integrated into the new organ .

Bells

After Baroque reconstruction of the castle church Lockwitzer ringing in August 1700 for the first time bells in the church tower. This was - a special feature at the time - directly connected to the church building and the castle . The bronze bells were melted down during the First World War and replaced in 1925 by three steel bells that were cast in Bochum .
