The Schmale Luzin is a mesotrophic lake in the Feldberg lake landscape in eastern Mecklenburg. Its name is derived from the Slavic tribe of the Liutizen, who once lived here .

location

The lake is only 150 to 300 meters wide and is located in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft nature park, southeast of its main town, Feldberg . It is located in the Hullerbusch and Schmaler Luzin nature reserve created in 1939 . However, by order of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the area had been protected since the middle of the 19th century. The lake extends over a length of about seven kilometers from Feldberg in the northwest to Carwitz in the south or southeast.

The Narrow Luzin is largely surrounded by steep slopes. One exception is in the Bäk area. Opposite this is a silting area in the direction of Hullerbusch. Opposite the allotment garden you will find Wiesenland in the direction of Wittenhagen. However, like almost everywhere, the bank area is also covered with black alder . As far as Carwitz there is mixed forest on the bank . The main component of the mixed forest are European beeches . An exception is the area from the Dead Bay to the Carwitz Basin, where the coniferous forest can be found. The location of Carwitz, in which there are some properties by the lake, is the only place on the lake, besides the allotment garden complex Feldberg, where there are only a few trees.

Emergence

The lake was created - like all lakes in this region - as a legacy of the Pomeranian stage of the Vistula Ice Age around 15,600 years ago. It is located in a terminal moraine area and is a glacial channel lake , i.e. a former meltwater channel below the glacier ice, which was permanently filled with water after the ice had receded. Accordingly, the lake is very deep with up to 34 meters compared to its narrow width.

structure

The Narrow Luzin consists of the north basin, which today extends from the earth dam to the Luzin ferry, max. 14 m deep and contains 3.42 million m³ of water, the main basin with Dead Bay, which extends from the Luzin ferry to the Schmal, max. 33.5 m deep and contains 6.83 million m³ of water as well as the Carwitzer basin, which extends from Schmal to the Bäk, max. 33 m deep and contains 10.50 million m³ of water. Originally the neck of the Wide Luzin belonged to the Narrow Luzin. With the construction of the earth dam, the neck was limnologically separated from the Narrow Luzin. The narrow with a width of 70 m and a basic depth of only 7 m is the narrowest part of the lake. It connects the main basin with the Carwitzer basin in a westerly direction.

use

The lake is used for recreational purposes and for fishing. There are 3 beaches on it, one of which is on the north bank of the Narrow, a nudist beach on the west bank of the Carwitzer basin and a beach in the local area of Carwitz. In the Feldberg area there is an allotment garden on the northwest bank. There is a hand-operated passenger cable ferry . This is attached to a rope stretched through the lake below the surface of the water, and a ferryman moves the ferry across the lake by turning a wheel on the rope. The ferry connects Feldberg with the district of Hullerbusch. The ferryman also rents out boats. The Narrow Luzin is closed to boats with internal combustion engines.

fauna

In 2008, as part of a student excursion at the Humboldt University in Berlin to the Luzinseen, an extensive study of temperature, aquatic plants, suspended matter and other things was carried out. Common fish species are: lead , roach , pike , eel , perch , burbot , three-spined stickleback , tench , bleak and whitefish . Rare fish species are carp , ruff , rudd and pikeperch .

The Siberian bullhead ( Cottus poecilopus ), which used to live in the lake as an Ice Age relic , could no longer be detected in recent years. On May 18, 2006, the first 73 Siberian bullheads were released as part of an artificial repopulation project.

Detected crustaceans are the American crayfish and the hover shrimp Mysis relicta .

Many eagles ( ospreys , white-tailed eagles , lesser spotted eagles ), ducks ( tufted ducks , golden ponds , pochards ) and otters live in the area .
