history

middle Ages

The place was first mentioned in 1274 as Smerenbach . In the 13th century there was probably a local nobility. In the 14th century, Schmerbach was owned by the Hohenlohe, which in 1321 and 1325 left goods to the Schäftersheim monastery and the German Order . Schmerbach probably came to the city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in 1399 together with the Lichtel rulership . In the 15th century the place was temporarily owned by the Rothenburg Spörlin, who sold the place back to the city in the 1460s.

Modern times

In 1526 Schmerbach was destroyed in a feud between Adam von Thüngen and the city of Rothenburg. In 1645 Schmerbach was again badly affected when a fire destroyed almost all houses. The place fell with Rothenburg to Bavaria in 1806 and again to Württemberg in 1810 and since then has belonged to the Mergentheim Oberamt and since 1938 to the Mergentheim district , which became part of the newly formed Main-Tauber district on January 1, 1973.

Until 1851 Schmerbach was a parcel of the formerly independent municipality of Oberrimbach. On February 1, 1972, Schmerbach was incorporated into the town of Creglingen.
