history

middle Ages

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1224 as Vinsterloch . The word loch probably indicates a piece of forest. In 1345 another, possibly prescribed, documentary mention as a Vynstern book followed . A Niederobel family von Finsterlohr was mentioned on site since 1224, which was mostly in Hohenlohe fiefdom. This lower aristocratic family had been fortunate or enfeoffed in numerous places in the area since the beginning of the 14th century, mostly around Mergentheim, but also around Gerabronn, but seem to have lost their property in Finsterlohr at an early stage. In the 14th to 16th centuries, the von Leuzenbronn, who were related by marriage to von Finsterlohr, and the barons of Seldeneck, as Würzburg, Hohenlohe and Brandenburg-Nuremberg feudal people, each had goods and rights.

A former castle is believed to be near the Finsterlohr church. Local rule probably passed to the imperial city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the 15th century . Hohenlohe-Weikersheim still had subjects on site in 1604 and the Teutonic Order sold income from Finsterlohr in 1460. In the 15th century at the latest, Rothenburg acquired the place with the entire authorities.

Modern times

In 1586 the noble family from Finsterlohr died out. In 1803 Finsterlohr fell to Bavaria, in 1810 again to Württemberg and since then has belonged to the Mergentheim District Office and since 1938 to the Mergentheim district , which was incorporated into the newly formed Main-Tauber District on January 1, 1973.

On February 1, 1972, Finsterlohr was incorporated into the town of Creglingen.

Population development

The population of Finsterlohr and the surrounding residential areas developed as follows:

year total
1961 376
1970 367
2016 282

On December 31, 2016, 282 people lived in the Finsterlohr district. These were distributed over the following places: Finsterlohr (176 inhabitants) with Burgstall (23 inhabitants) and Schonach (83 inhabitants).

politics

The blazon of the Finsterlohrer coat of arms reads: Divided by red and silver with a left step .

religion

Finsterlohr was probably originally ecclesiastically dependent on Burgstall, later on Leuzenbronn . A pastor was mentioned in 1352. The imperial city of Rothenburg introduced the Reformation. The evangelical parish Finsterlohr includes the district Finsterlohr with the associated hamlets Burgstall and Schonach as well as the places Wolfsbuch and Weiler of the city Creglingen belonging to the district Blumweiler. The evangelical rectory in Finsterlohr also looks after the evangelical parishes of Lichtel and Schmerbach. In the associated castle stable there was a Margaret Church, which was probably a parish church, but then disappeared. Since then, the place belongs to the evangelical parish Finsterlohr.

The Catholics belong to Creglingen.
