The Schottenkirche St. Nicolai and St. Jacobi is the former church of the Schottenkloster St. Jakob in the old town of Erfurt . Today it is a Catholic branch church of the Lorenz parish .

The three-aisled basilica is of Romanesque origin and partly Gothic. The Benedictine monastery was founded in 1036 by the brother of Naumburg Bishop Hildeward , Walther von Glisberg , whose grave slab is on display in the church. It shows the Reichsministeriale (Reich Ministerial) wealthy at Jena Kunitzburg and his wife in Romanesque style. He was also voigt of his foundation. The monastery was a subsidiary of the St. Jakob Abbey in Regensburg , founded by Marianus Scottus , from which the current name Schottenkirche is derived. The construction work was completed by 1200 and the monastery church was completed. In 1472, the great fire in Erfurt destroyed parts of the church, which were then rebuilt in Gothic forms.

The baroque west facade was added from 1720 to 1729. In 1956 the baroque galleries were removed from the church and the floor was lowered to the original level of the 12th century. Due to the constant increase in the level of the terrain after 900 years, which is typical for old cities, it is around one meter below the outer ground, so that a few steps lead down to the church at the entrance.

Since 1744 the church belonged as a parish church to the Nikolaigemeinde and since 2005 to the Lorenzgemeinde. The monastery buildings were demolished in 1820. In 1964 the Schottenkirche was re-consecrated and in 1971 it was given a uniform design similar to that of Erfurt Cathedral with new glazing by Charles Crodel .
