action

It's Christmas and Anna Blank works like every day at the cash desk of an airport snack bar. She does not enjoy the work and the stories of the passengers who want to spend the holidays away depressed her. Nor does she build up the anticipation of an old woman who regularly flies into the distance for a few days. At the door of her apartment building in the big city, she is shot at with a ball by two cheeky boys, as always, she gives the homeless man who sleeps at the entrance some change, and in her empty apartment doesn't know what to do with herself . She makes a list of things she wants to see by New Year's Eve, including watching Gone with the Wind and going to the opera. On the other hand, she has given up on her great desire to fly to Nairobi like her late mother . On New Year's Eve, she finally wants to take her own life with pills that she has already collected.

To cross the first item off the list, she went to the cinema on Christmas Eve, where Gone with the Wind was shown. However, the cinema is closing because it is Christmas. Not only Anna stands in vain at the cash register, but also Egon Schmidt, known as Eddi. Both decide to go out to eat something and end up in Eddi's local pub, where host Horst reluctantly serves them a quick meal that both of them have to eat in a hurry. Then they walk through the streets of the city together, Eddi tells a lot and at the end gives Anna a shell. They decide to meet again the next day. Anna has revealed to Eddi that she works at the cash register in the airport bistro and Eddi visits her there the next day. She invites him to Christmas dinner, which will also be attended by a few friends. In reality she is only expecting Eddi, who is delighted with the food, even if Anna has burned a few things. While Anna washes the dishes a little later, Eddi looks at the apartment and finds Anna's list and collection of pills. She wants to go to the opera with him and thus do one point on her list, but he goes with her to a gaming room, where they both compete in a car race. Eddi hesitates for a long time before letting her return to her apartment alone.

Eddi told Anna that he works as a bus driver. In reality, his dream is to become a bus driver one day. He is unemployed, takes driving lessons that he occasionally misses, and has great problems getting his life under control himself. Because he loses all jobs again after a short time, his agent at the employment office has almost given up on him. Because Eddi knows that Anna wants to commit suicide on New Year's Eve, he visits her on December 31st. They both go out, he protects them in a strip club when a clown makes fun of them, and then takes them to the bus station. He shows her his favorite bus, which he knows from his driving lessons. Later the two of them secretly take a short ride on a bus and Eddi confesses to Anna that he can't tell left and right apart. Anna makes a ring out of chewing gum paper for him, which she puts on his right hand. With the donkey bridge "right - ring" Eddi can now remember the directions. They return to the bus parking lot and kiss as the new year begins. Eddi stays with Anna, who secretly throws away her pills and tears up the list. She is now happy at her job and finally succeeds in reprimanding the two boys who are always shooting at her with a ball. Eddi seems to be lucky too, because he is finally allowed to take the bus driving test. The test goes well until Eddi loses Anna's chewing gum paper ring while driving. Not only is he now disoriented, but he tries to find the paper again while driving. He almost causes a serious accident and eventually fails the exam. He meets with Anna at the laundromat, but evades her questions about the reasons for his depression. But he finally wants to clear the table and takes her to his favorite bakery, where his illegitimate daughter Tina works. She does not know that he is her father, the mother strictly forbade any contact. Suddenly Tina's mother appears and threatens Eddi with the police. Eddi brings Anna home and separates from her, because a man who once beat his wife and has an illegitimate daughter is not for her. When he leaves, Anna is desperate.

She makes up her mind to change her life. The old woman at the airport, who has already spoken to her several times about the strength of the Guardian Angels, is her first aid: she gets Anna to finally quit her unpopular work at the bistro checkout. Instead, she applies as a saleswoman in a department store and is accepted. Eddi is looking for it in vain. She learns from his landlady that he owes her and has not been in the apartment for a long time. Horst tells her that Eddi never worked as a bus driver. A boy in the laundromat wants to help her. Since she says she has lost something, she should just get it back. Anna goes to the bus parking lot and discovers Eddi sleeping in one of the cars. He is now dependent on welfare, has no roof over his head and tries to motivate himself with beer. Anna is too good for him in his eyes, but she makes it clear to him that she owes her life to him and that she likes him for who he is. Once he was her guardian angel, now she wants to be one for him. They both embrace. A little later Eddi got his bus driver's license and is finally working in his dream job. He lives with Anna, who will shortly be flying to Nairobi alone. Neither of them can afford a flight for two. Eddi drives her to the airport in his bus and looks longingly after her. Shortly after the plane took off, Anna appears on the bus. She has made up her mind that she really wants to start the journey with him - sometime when she can afford it. Together they drive back to town. A little later the old woman from the airport and the boy from the laundromat are talking. Both think they have done their job. A little later, the Guardian Angels disappear as if by magic.

criticism

On the occasion of the television premiere, Der Spiegel wrote :

“Miguel Alexandre (director) and Ben Taylor (book) have made a love story whose heroes may not be beautiful and rich, but despite their woefulness, they drag themselves through the world with beautiful, eerie, lifelike stories. These two could easily do without the use of Christmas guardian angels. "

- Der Spiegel, No. 38, 2001

The film service called Guardian Angels Wanted, an "emotional and humorous comedy about real guardian angels that celebrates the miracle of love in a friendly way."

For TV Spielfilm it was a “nice little people film. Miguel Alexandre […] combines satire, poetry and working class dreariness and creates a wistful Christmas mood. Conclusion: a sensitive underdog ballad ”.
