Unprotected is a German television film by director René Heisig from 2009. It is based on the book "They took my freedom - confessions of an illegal" by Maria Moreno and Steffen Bayer. Carolina Vera plays a foreigner who lives illegally and in constant fear of being discovered in Germany.

María from Honduras lives illegally in a German city. When she wanted to bring her son Pablo and her daughter Isabel to Germany, her German friend, the teacher Jens, separated from her. With cleaning jobs and working in a large kitchen, she earns some money to rent and renovate a shabby apartment. In addition, she illegally borrows EUR 2,000 for EUR 1,000 in interest to pay for the flight for her children. However, the children are sent back by customs because they entered the country without an adult companion and María cannot pick them up without valid papers. The second attempt to bring the children to Germany succeeds. Isabel doesn't feel at home in Germany. Both children are under constant threat of being discovered and expelled by the police. Through her ex-boyfriend Jens, María comes into contact with a headmistress, with whom she can register the children without papers. María's friend Sami from Morocco , who has a relationship with a fruit dealer friend and is pregnant by him, is caught by the police and deported. At school it is known that Pablo and Isabel are staying illegally in Germany. When the police pick up an African family from the neighborhood - the boy is friends with Pablo - María brings her children to the apartment of the actuary Peter, where she has a cleaning job. He befriends the children and offers María to formally marry him - we will see later if we want to live together. To do this, María has to return to Honduras, get the necessary papers and enter Germany legally. At the airport she says goodbye to her children and Peter.

Unprotected was shot between October 7th and November 11th, 2008 in Augsburg and Munich . The film premiered on June 28, 2009 under the title Illegal at the Munich Film Festival and was first broadcast on ZDF on April 26, 2010 . The audience participation was 4.56 million and a market share of 14.1%, or 7.2% among 14 to 49 year olds.
