The Schwalmaue is a natural space unit, natural space number 343.210, in the West Hessian valley . Administratively, it is located in the Schwalm-Eder district in North Hesse ( Germany ).

Position and extent

The 22.43 km 2 large Schwalmaue forms of 48.55 km 2 large Fritzlarer Eder hall (no. 343211), the Waberner level (no. 343.21) in the Natural Environment Hessengau (343.2) in the West Hesse Depression. It lies almost entirely in the urban area of Borken and comprises a large part of its area and, in the northeast, part of the districts of Uttershausen and Unshausen , both districts of the municipality of Wabern .

The Schwalmaue is drained by the Schwalm . It begins in the west at the Schwalmpforte , where the Schwalm emerges from the Löwensteiner Grund (No. 341.7) between Kerstenhausen in the west and Kleinenglis in the east . The landscape borders in the south on the Trockenerfurther Gefilde (no.343.10) and the Borkener Basin (no.343.13), both parts of the Landsburger Senke (no.343.1), and in the southeast on the Homberger Bucht (no.343.20). In the far east it touches the Homberg highlands near Unshausen (No. 356.3). To the north, the Großenengliser Platte (No. 343.22) lies in a wedge shape between the Schwalmaue and the Fritzlar Ederflur, until they meet between Uttershausen and Unshausen.

Geology and ecology

The predominant soils are fluvial sediments from the Tertiary with layers of sand , gravel and clay . In these, in the so-called Borken lignite area, abundant lignite deposits from the Eocene are stored, which were exploited in open- cast and underground mining from 1897 to 1991 . As relics of coal mining, there are several recultivated spoil heaps and a number of larger and smaller lakes and ponds that have emerged from empty open- cast mine holes in the Schwalmaue .

This Borkener lake district contains areas of avifaunistic value. The still not completely flooded Gombether See is a bird breeding area of national importance, and the Singliser See is a breeding and resting area of supraregional importance. The entire Borkener See, including its shore zones, is located in the 350 hectare " Borkener See nature reserve " and is an important resting area for waterbirds and waders .
