The Schwarzwasserbach is an orographically left tributary of the Upper Ems in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . It has a length of 6.0 km and is the first named body of water to be taken up by the Ems according to its origin.

River course

The Schwarzwasserbach is created in the east of the Hövelhof center by a bifurcation from the Krollbach, which rises in the Senne . While the water of the Krollbach flows over the Haustenbach and the Lippe into the Rhine , the water of the Schwarzwasserbach branching off to the right is fed to the Ems . After its formation, the stream crosses Hövelhof centrally and reaches the Rengeringsbruch wet meadow area to the west of the village . Above this area, the 6.4 km long Holtebach, which rises in the Moosheide nature reserve, flows to the right side of the water . To the north of Espeln , the Schwarzwasserbach finally flows into the Ems and is thus officially its first named tributary.

Differences in classification

Information board on the bifurcation

The statement that the Schwarzwasserbach is the first tributary of the Ems is not entirely clear. The official geospatial material shows this as a fact. However, other sources attribute this property to the Hallerbach , although this body of water is a tributary of the Holtebach. Here, too, the delimitation is not clear, as the two streams are alternatively referred to as "Upper Hallerbach" and "Lower Hallerbach". The wooden information board at the bifurcation also names the Hallerbach as the mouth of the Schwarzwasserbach.

History and etymology

The course of the Schwarzwasserbach has shifted again and again in the course of the last centuries as a result of sand deposits, which is not an untypical process for the Senne brooks. In the 17th century the water of the brook was used to feed the moats around the newly built hunting lodge . At that time, the care of the stream was neglected, a slowdown in the flow speed caused by the sand deposits was the result. The deposited humus silt gave the water a dark color, from which the current name is derived.

Estuary into the Ems

In the 1820s there was a severe fever epidemic in Hövelhof , which killed hundreds of people. Finally, a connection was established between the disease and the advanced swamping of the streams in the area - especially the Schwarzwasserbach - since their water was regularly used as drinking water. As a countermeasure, the stream was re-regulated and deepened; the formerly functioning water management was thus restored. The hoped-for success came, the disease disappeared. This development gave the water the name “health ditch”.

environment

The water structure quality of the Schwarzwasserbach is currently in poor condition. It corresponds to structural quality classes VI and VII over the entire course and thus to severe or excessive damage. Within the Hövelhofer town center the condition is particularly remote from nature, here the water is led through a pipeline.

The water quality is also impaired, reasons for this include the introduction of rainwater in the center of Hövelhof and the influence of the Holtebach, whose water quality is polluted by the crossing of an industrial area.
