The Krollbach is an orographically right tributary of the Glenne in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . It has a length of 15.3 km.

River course

The source of the Krollbach is located at around 153 meters above sea level within the Senne military training area and thus on the site of a restricted military area . As with most of the rivers in this area, a dry valley joins the Krollbach above the headwaters .

Following the flattening of the Sennelandscape in front of the Teutoburg Forest , the water flows away in a south-westerly direction within a Kastental valley , after around three kilometers it passes the former Krollmühle, then crosses the southern edge of the Moosheide nature reserve and, until the end of 2018, flowed through a pond built for the purpose of sand catching . This pond was dissolved in the course of the construction of a rain retention basin north of the A 33.

After crossing the federal motorway 33 , the Krollbach turns towards the settlement area of Hövelhof and reaches a river bifurcation on the eastern edge of the village , over which the right arm, known as the Schwarzwasserbach , flows westward into the Ems . The Krollbach continues south-west past Hövelhof and below the village reaches the approximately 121.8 hectare Erdgarten-Lauerwiesen nature reserve . Within this protected area consisting of wet meadows and alder forest , the brook crosses the urban area of Delbrück .

To the east of the Ostenland district there is a first canal-like connection to the Glenne, which runs only slightly further south and is referred to as Haustenbach in this area, but the Krollbach follows the Glenne in an approximately parallel course for another 2.5 km and finally flows south of Ostenland at the height of the Waterworks in this one.

The Krollbach overcomes a height difference of 58 meters during its course of flow, resulting in an average bed gradient of 3.8 ‰.

Water quality

Since the Krollbach is located in the upper reaches within a restricted area, the water quality is hardly affected, at least there, due to the lack of agricultural or industrial discharges. The water structure in the upper reaches also shows a largely natural state. With the entry of the river into the Hövelhofer settlement area, however, the water structure quality decreases significantly and in some sections is classified as noticeably to severely damaged.

history

As a result of sedimentation and the effect of the dust barrier of an elongated moraine wall , the Krollbach once had a network-like structure of individual streams, ponds and swamp areas and this inland delta made the development of the Hövelhof town center difficult for a long time. Around 1930 some of these brooks still washed around today's town center. However, at the beginning of the 19th century, the individual Krollbach arms were channeled and the northern arm was drained as a result. Individual remains of the ponds that were formerly fed by this arm and the bed of the stream can still be seen today.

etymology

Map of Hövelhof around 1805 with "Krull Wasser"

The name of the Krollbach originated from the shape of its inland delta, probably based on the term "Krull", which originally referred to a fan-shaped hairstyle; or the term "Krollen" for a fan-shaped gathered type of cloths and hoods.

However, the Krollbach was evidently a nameless body of water for a long time. This is indicated, among other things, by the name of a row settlement that was built on the stream before 1700 and was simply referred to as "pond water"; and in 1828 the cadastral map of that time shows a street on the Krollbach with the simple designation "Wasserweg". The name of the body of water as "Krull Wasser" can be found for the first time in a map from 1805 (see illustration).
