The Sea-Land Mariner was a container ship owned by the US Sea-Land Corporation . The ship belonged to the D-9 class consisting of twelve units .
General
The ship was built under the hull number 1200 by the Japanese shipyard Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding and delivered in October 1980. In 1985 it was lengthened by 30.48 m at a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries shipyard .
The ship was from a Neunzylinder- two-stroke - diesel engine of the manufacturer Sulzer (Type: 9RND90M) with 22,177 kW power driven, which had been built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries under license. Four diesel generators were available for the power supply , which had a total output of 4450 kW.
There were spaces on board for 2,686 TEU , including 261 refrigerated containers . With a homogeneous loading with 14-ton containers , 2252 TEU could still be loaded. The ship did not have its own loading gear .
Explosion and fire
On April 18, 1998, there was an explosion on board the ship in the area of hold 7 behind the superstructure, followed by a fire. Two sailors were injured in the explosion , one of whom went overboard. Two other sailors were missing.
The ship, which was on a time charter for the China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) at the time of the accident , was in the Mediterranean about 130 nautical miles southwest of the island of Crete en route from the Far East to Europe. The cargo consisted of around 1500 containers that the ship had loaded in Hong Kong and Singapore . Singapore left the ship on April 5th. The next port should be Rotterdam .
The fire was brought under control on the morning of April 19 with the help of 18 people from the USS Wasp , an amphibious assault ship of the US Navy , which had transferred to the Sea-Land Mariner to fight the fire . The two injured sailors were taken aboard the USS Wasp for treatment .
The explosion and fire and the subsequent extinguishing work caused considerable damage to the aft section . So fell u. a. turned off the steering gear so that the ship was unable to maneuver. It therefore had to be towed after the fire was brought under control.
15 containers went overboard in the explosion. So that these could not pose a threat to shipping, they were shot at and sunk from helicopters of the USS Wasp .
The ship anchored off Piraeus on April 21 , where the fire was finally extinguished. Some of the damaged containers were also deleted here.
During the investigation into the course of the accident it was found that polymer beads (expandable polymeric beads) were transported in several containers that were loaded in hold 7, but these were listed in the cargo documents as polystyrene (expandable polystyrene). Unlike polystyrene, polymer beads are classified as hazardous goods class 9 according to the IMDG code , as they can develop flammable gases. Holds in which polymer beads are loaded should therefore be ventilated. This was not the case with the Sea-Land Mariner . Welding work that was routinely carried out on the catwalk between the holds were assumed to be the cause of the explosion. The gases could have been ignited.
Whereabouts of the ship
After completing the investigation into the cause of the accident, the ship was towed to Rijeka . There the containers still on board were cleared and the ship repaired. It then went back to the Sea-Land Corporation's liner service .
In 2007 the ship was sold to Target Marine in Greece along with sister ships Sea-Land Express , Sea-Land Endurance , Sea-Land Freedom and Sea-Land Voyager . It was chartered by the French container shipping company CMA CGM as CMA CGM Lys from June 2007 to April 2009 before it was sold for demolition .
