The Sea Wind is a railway ferry of the Estonian shipping company Tallink that was put into service in 1972 . She was originally built as a RoRo freighter Svealand and converted in 1989. The ship is in use on the route from Muuga to Vuosaari .

history

Svealand

The Svealand was the October 21, 1969 Rederi AB Svea ordered and ran on 17 November 1971, the hull number 397 in the Elsinore Skibsværft in Helsingor from the stack . The delivery to the meanwhile new owner Trave Lines followed on March 11, 1972, the commissioning between Helsingborg and Travemünde six days later.

From October 1976 the ship was used for the Linjen saga and from January 1981 for the Linjen TT saga . Also in 1981 it switched to the Trelleborg to Travemünde route. In the following years, the Svealand changed hands several times, and it was converted twice: In April and May 1984 at Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel and for an extension from July to September 1984 at Fosen Yards in Rissa .

Saga wind

Under the new name Saga Wind , the ship resumed service between Trelleborg and Travemünde in September 1984 - now owned by the Scandinavian Ferry Line. In 1986 it again became the property of TT-Line, which had already managed it together with the Saga Linjen in 1981.

On January 29, 1989, the Saga Wind arrived at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg to be converted into a train ferry. The external appearance changed significantly as a result. In addition, the ship received additional passenger compartments and could now carry up to 220 people.

Sea wind

In charter of the SeaWind Line and with the new name Sea Wind , the ship took up service between Stockholm and Åbo on April 21, 1989 . In January 1993 it was bought by the SeaWind Line.

On March 5, 1997, the Sea Wind ran aground on a voyage from Åbo to Stockholm. The passengers were taken over by the small passenger ship Solöga . After the ship was towed free the following day, it arrived in Åbo on March 7 for repairs. In April 1997 it was able to resume service.

In the years that followed, Sea Wind changed routes several times. She is currently on the line from Muuga to Vuosaari. The ship has been owned by the Estonian shipping company Tallink since 2009. After sailing under the Swedish flag since it was commissioned, it was flagged to Estonia in 2015. Home port of the Sea Wind is Tallinn .
