Seamus O'Regan PC (born January 18, 1971 in St. John's , Newfoundland and Labrador ) is a Canadian television presenter and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada . In the 29th Canadian Cabinet he's since Nov. 20, 2019 Minister of Natural Resources. He was previously Minister for Services for Indigenous ( Minister of Indigenous services ), Minister of Veterans Affairs and Deputy Minister of Defense .

Life

O'Regan grew up in Goose Bay . He graduated from St. Francis Xavier University , at University College Dublin and at Darwin College of the University of Cambridge political science and graduated with a Master of Philosophy from. He also studied marketing at Insead Business School . O'Regan worked as assistant to the Canadian Environment Minister Jean Charest , as well as a consultant and speechwriter of the Prime Minister of Newfoundland and Labrador Brian Tobin . He worked as a television presenter for the Canadian television station CTV , where he hosted the breakfast television program Canada AM from 2001 . In November 2011 he switched to CTV National News as a correspondent .

O'Regan has been a member of the Canadian House of Commons for the constituency of St. John's South — Mount Pearl since 2015 , which he won with 57.9 percent of the vote. On August 28, 2017, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed him Minister of Veterans Affairs and, therefore, Deputy Minister of Defense of Canada. He held until January 14, 2019 this department, when he was appointed Minister of services to Indigenous ( Minister of Indigenous Services has been appointed). In the 2019 general election , he was able to defend his seat with 51.1 percent of the vote. In a cabinet reshuffle in November 2019 following the election, O'Regan was appointed Minister of Natural Resources after previous incumbent Amarjeet Sohi failed to win his constituency in Edmonton .

O'Regan served on the board of directors of The Rooms art and culture museum in St. John's for ten years . He is a founding member of the Smiling Land Foundation and the Company Theater in Toronto . He was also a board member of WWF Canada , The Walrus , Katimavik and Canada World Youth . In July 2010 he married his long-time partner Steve Doussis.
