Sean O'Sullivan (born April 29, 1994 ) is an English snooker player .

Career

O'Sullivan first attempted to qualify for the Main Tour during the 2011 Q School , a qualifying series for amateurs . In two of the three tournaments he failed in his first game against Mike Hallett and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh . Once he made it to the semi-finals of his group, where he was defeated by the eventual group winner Tian Pengfei .

The following season, O'Sullivan took part as an amateur player in eleven of twelve tournaments of the Players Tour Championship 2011/12 . However, he never got past the last 128 round. He often failed because of well-established professionals like Ding Junhui , Stephen Maguire or Steve Davis .

At the Q School 2012 he was finally able to qualify for the main tour of the professionals: While he had to accept a first round defeat against Stuart Carrington in the first attempt , he was able to win his group in the second tournament (against Nick Dyson among others ) and thus received at 18 Years a two-year ticket for the 2012/13 and 2013/14 season .

In his first year as a professional O'Sullivan had to pay hardship and apart from two narrow wins against David Gilbert and Jack Lisowski at PTC tournaments, there were only opening defeats in 2012. It was not until the third to last tournament of the season, the World Open , that he managed to win his first win in a world ranking against Paul Davison . At the China Open he even came in the top 64 with two wins. However, he did not reach more than 90th place in the world rankings. The next season began with reaching the round of 32 at the Bulgarian Open , his best PTC result to date. After that he was able to achieve a first round win at the larger tournaments four times, which among other things brought him into the Top 64 of the UK Championship , but overall he collected far too few points to stay in the world rankings or any other rating on the Main Tour to secure. With position 102 as a final placement, he lost his professional status again in 2014. The attempt to achieve an immediate return through the Q School ended in the third round of both qualifying tournaments.

In the 2014/15 he had the opportunity to gain more experience as an amateur in the Main Tour qualifying tournaments and at the German Masters he reached round 2 with a victory over Thepchaiya Un-Nooh . However, he had his first major successes at the PTC Tournaments. At the Riga Open , he advanced to the quarterfinals and only lost to future finalist Mark Allen . He also played successfully in all three Asian tournaments on the Players Tour and made it to the round of 16 at the Xuzhou Open . In the “Order of Merit”, he was one of the best amateurs in both the European and Asian tournaments and, second in the Asian rankings, received a Tour Card for the next two seasons of the professional tour.

Since Sean O'Sullivan was still an amateur in spring 2015 and not yet 21 years old, he was also able to take part in the English U-21 championship. There he won his first title with an 8: 3 win against last year's winner Ashley Carty .

His second attempt on the professional circuit began with a first win at the Australian Open . At the Paul Hunter Classic he reached the last sixteen and also at other PTC tournaments he had minor successes. At the International Championship and the UK Championship he made it into round 2. At the beginning of the 2016/17 , he reached the round of 32 for the first time in a normal ranking tournament at the Riga Masters .
