Sebastian Voigt
Sebastian Voigt (* 1978 in Ludwigsburg ) is a German historian .
Life
Sebastian Voigt grew up in Marbach am Neckar . His father is the historian Johannes H. Voigt . Sebastian Voigt studied history, German literature, philosophy and education at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg im Breisgau , the University of Massachusetts / Amherst and the University of Leipzig from 2000 to 2007 . In 2006 he obtained his Magister Artium and in 2007 he passed the first state examination for high school teaching. During his studies, he received scholarships from the German National Academic Foundation , the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and the Fulbright Commission . Between 2003 and 2013 Sebastian Voigt worked at the Simon Dubnow Institute for Jewish History and Culture in Leipzig .
In 2009 he received a doctoral scholarship from the Hans Böckler Foundation and received his doctorate from the University of Leipzig in 2013 with a thesis on the memory and family history of left-wing Jewish activists in post-war France. The publication appeared in 2015 under the title “The Jewish May '68: Pierre Goldman, Daniel Cohn-Bendit and André Glucksmann in post-war France” and was widely received both in the daily press and in specialist journals. In an interview, Daniel Cohn-Bendit commented positively on Voigt's idea that his Jewish origins had a meaning in the 1968 movement, even if it didn't play a subjective role for him at the time. Voigt has been working as a research assistant at the Institute for Contemporary History Munich - Berlin since 2013 . There he coordinates the graduate school “Social Consequences of Change in Work in the Second Half of the 20th Century”. Voigt is also the specialist editor of the review journal Sehepunkte and the IfZ series Zeitgeschichte in conversation .
From 2013 to 2015 he was a lecturer at the Chair of Contemporary History at the University of Leipzig. Since 2015 he has been a fellow at the Institute for Social Movements and a lecturer at the Ruhr University in Bochum. Voigt has written two monographs, edited several books and published numerous articles. He is co-founder and editor of the series “Relations. Essays zur Gegenwart ”, which has been published by Neofelis Verlag since 2014 . His main research interests include the history of trade unions and the labor movement , anti-Semitism , ( anti ) communism and the history of the left . He has also published numerous journalistic articles and commentaries, including in the TAZ , Jungle World , Tagesspiegel and the Jerusalem Post .
Voigt was also interviewed by major media outlets on various topics, including Deutschlandfunk on the death of André Glucksmann and ZDF on Willy Brandt's government declaration in 1969 and the state of the SPD today.
Controversy
Individual members of the left parliamentary group and parts of their party base criticize the Israeli Palestine policy violently. Sebastian Voigt and the political scientist Samuel Salzborn described anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic tendencies in the party in an essay in 2011 . The article first published in the Frankfurter Rundschau appeared later, somewhat revised, in the Zeitschrift für Politik . The essay was the occasion of a current hour requested by the CDU / CSU and FDP in the Bundestag. Some members of the party leadership were critical of the tendencies described, others denied them. In an article also published in the Zeitschrift für Politik, the sociologist Peter Ullrich and the political scientist Alban Werner criticized Voigt and Salzborn's contribution as "methodologically deficient" and "inconsistent". According to them, the authors proceeded selectively when dealing with the current state of research and did not adequately take into account different ways of interpreting the data.
