Blessing Church (Frankfurt-Griesheim)
The Blessed Church is a Protestant church in the neo-Romanesque style and a Hessian cultural monument in Griesheim , a district of Frankfurt am Main .
history
In the Middle Ages, Griesheim belonged to Nied and was closely linked to its history. Since 1342, both places belonged to the County of Hanau , which introduced the Lutheran Reformation in 1554 . After that there were repeated disputes with the Archdiocese of Mainz . In the middle of the 17th century there were only a few Protestants in Griesheim who went to church in Bockenheim , Ginnheim or Gutleuthof . As a result of an exchange agreement between Hanau and Mainz, Griesheim and Nied fell entirely to Mainz in 1684. In this contract, the residents were assured freedom of religion, as was laid down in the Peace of Westphalia of 1648. In 1779, the Protestant pastor from Gutleuthof in Griesheim was allowed to perform official acts for the first time. In 1803 Griesheim and Nied came to the Electorate of Hesse . In 1828 the Simultankirche was built in Nied , which the Protestant people of Griesheim have been able to use since then.
In 1861, thanks to a generous donation from Louise von Bose , the people of Griesheim were given permission by the Nassau government to found their own Protestant church. In return, the founder received the right of patronage and appointed Eugen Heydenreich as the first pastor. For the new church building, a plot of land in Alte Falterstrasse was chosen, on which the first cemetery was located from 1815 to 1830. After further financial resources had been collected from Gustav-Adolf-Vereinen and the architect Heinrich Burnitz had been commissioned with the planning, construction of the new church could begin. The foundation stone was laid on October 20, 1863, and the new church was consecrated on September 20, 1865.
The sandstone relief above the portal was added in 1881. In 1893 the bell tower was built according to plans by the architect Ludwig Hofmann , which made the previous roof turret superfluous. In 1894 the interior was painted with floral motifs and in 1906 the gallery was added to the rear. The interior was renovated in 1925 based on a design by Otto Linnemann . During the Second World War , the church was damaged in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main and then repaired through self-help. From 1955 to 1956 a thorough renovation was carried out under the direction of the architect Arnold Rakete, during which stained glass windows were also installed.
architecture
The Blessing Church is located in the center of Griesheim at Alten Falterstraße 6. The hall church has a semicircular choir closure in the west and a gable roof. The base is about twenty-six by twelve meters. The outer walls consist mainly of red sandstone and are designed by an arched frieze in the area of the eaves and the gable wall . The design with round arches is typical of neo-Romanesque architecture. Pilaster strips and five arched windows structure the long walls. The eastern gable wall on the entrance side is partially plastered and also divided vertically with wall panels. The portal consists of smoothly hewn sandstone in contrast to the rough surface of the other facades. The sandstone relief by Heinrich Petry above the portal shows Jesus and the disciples in Emmaus .
The interior is characterized by the large arch in the wall in front of the choir and the visible roof structure. The design of the wooden beams takes up the neo-Romanesque motif of the round arches. A two-sided gallery is arranged in front of the brightly plastered walls . Your parapet is clad with vertical wooden strips.
The thirteen stained glass windows were made by Hans Bernd Gossel in the glass workshops of the Städelschule based on a design by Hermann Goepfert . The subjects of the pictures were taken from Genesis and the Revelation of John .
organ
The organ on the rear gallery comes from the organ builder Wilhelm Sauer , was originally made as Opus 475 in 1887 for the Evangelical Church in Bochum 's Laer district and was stored in 1974 because the church was demolished. The historical instrument was acquired by the Hessian regional church and installed in 1995. It is particularly well suited for playing 19th century organ music. The organ has 28 stops with mechanical action and stop action and the following disposition :
