In the 19th century the population was mostly between 250 and 400 people; the mechanization of agriculture has led to job losses and, as a result, to an exodus of part of the population to the cities.
economy
For centuries, the residents of the village lived largely on self-sufficiency from the yields of the small fields and, above all, from raising cattle. Today, fruit and vegetable growing and forestry play the most important roles in the economic life of the municipality; In addition, hiking tourism in the surrounding chestnut forests plays a less important role.
history
The area was probably around 500 BC. Settled by the Celtic tribe of the Vettonen ; Romans, Visigoths and Moors, however, have left no trace on the high-lying municipality and so begins the story of the place only after the recapture ( reconquista ) and resettlement ( repoblación ) of the region in the 12th and 13th centuries. In the Middle Ages, Segura de Toro belonged temporarily to the Knights Templar (see coat of arms), who built a castle here in the 12th century, but was dissolved between 1307 and 1312.
Attractions
- The most important sight is the figure of an Iberian bull or boar ( verraco ) found in the area and brought to the Plaza Mayor , which dates back to the 6th or 5th century BC. Is dated. It is carved out of a block of granite , although at this time the use of metal tools - which is quite possible elsewhere - is unclear.
- The church of San Juan , built from rubble stones, is an inconspicuous building from the 15th century with a small bell gable ( espadanya ). The large natural stones of the building are covered by thick layers of plaster. The free-standing bell tower ( campanario ) rests on a foundation made of large granite blocks.
- The ruins of the walled Templar castle ( castillo ) are located near the church.
