The sharp decline in population in the second half of the 20th century is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms and the associated loss of jobs.

economy

For centuries, the residents of the village lived largely on self-sufficiency from the produce of the small fields and gardens, but above all from cattle breeding. Today fruit and vegetable cultivation (especially paprika) and forestry play the most important roles in the economic life of the municipality; in addition, tourism only plays a subordinate role as a source of income.

history

The region belonged to the settlement area of the Celtic tribe of the Vettones and was occupied by the Romans in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC. Conquered. Since the square was on Via de la Plata , they may have founded a military camp ( castrum ) here . Visigoths and Moors have left no traces in the municipality and so the actual history of the place begins only after the recapture ( reconquista ) and resettlement ( repoblación ) the area in the 12th and 13th centuries. In the late Middle Ages, the place was temporarily divided into two parts and consisted of two parishes - the northeast was within the sphere of influence of the Zuñiga family, who were appointed dukes of Béjar in 1485 ; the southwest belonged to the diocese of Coria . At the beginning of the 19th century, Aldeanueva suffered from the Napoleonic occupation forces . In the course of the territorial reform of 1833, the place came to the Extremadura region as a whole .
