The significant population decline since the 1950s is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms and the associated loss of jobs.
economy
Viticulture, olive growing and cattle breeding have been practiced in the area since Roman times . The cultivation of wheat and other crops used to be mainly self-sufficient . Part of the municipality is wooded and is used as a hunting area. There is also a tungsten and tin mine that is being exploited by a British company.
history
Iberians , Romans and Visigoths hardly left any traces. In the 8th century Arab- Berber armies overran the region; the place name seems to come from Almohadic times. Around the year 1230 the area was occupied by Alfonso IX. Recaptured by León for the Christians ( reconquista ) and given to the Order of Saint Santiago ; then there was a new or resettlement ( repoblación ) by Christians from the north of the Iberian Peninsula and by refugees from Andalusia ( mudéjares ) . It was not until 1596 that Almoharín broke away from the neighboring town of Montánchez .
Attractions
- The south side of the three-portal and three-aisled Iglesia del Salvador received a portico with a gallery above it in the 17th century . Also noteworthy is the multi-tiered upper part of the bell tower (campanario) , which was built between the 15th and 18th centuries .
- The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Sopetrán , built at the beginning of the 20th century, stands on the outskirts. It also has a portico - but on the north side.
