economy
The basis of the town's economy was and is agriculture and, above all, the cultivation of fruit trees - the cherries from the Valle del Jerte are known throughout Spain. There is also small industry, handicrafts, retail and service industries and tourism has also played a certain role since the 1970s.
history
Celtic, Roman, Visigoth and Islamic traces have not yet been found; It seems that the history of the place with the recolonization ( repoblación ) by Christians from the north of the Iberian Peninsula to recapture ( reconquista ) and the expulsion of the Moors in the late 12th century began. Among the new settlers were also Jews who, however, as a result of the Alhambra Edict of 1492, had to profess Christianity or emigrate.
Attractions

- The construction of the parish church of San Miguel Arcángel began at the end of the 15th century on the site of the destroyed synagogue ; the unadorned single-nave building was not completed until the 17th century. The late Baroque altarpiece in the apse is the work of the Castilian carver Juan de Arenas and dates from 1681–1683.
- There is a cherry museum in the village ( Museo de la Cereza ).
- There are several hermit churches ( ermitas ) in and around the village ; the most beautiful and regionally significant is that of the Virgen de Peñas Albas with a figure of a nursing Maria ( Maria lactans ).
