The significant population decline since the 1950s is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs.

economy

The area has hardly any arable land. The cultivation of wheat and other crops used to serve mainly for self-sufficiency ; In addition, there were many uncultivated areas due to the lack of water, which are, however, suitable for extensive livestock farming ( sheep and goats ), even if in earlier centuries the herds were driven on drift paths (cañadas) in the higher mountain regions in central and northern Spain had to be.

history

As several, albeit badly damaged, dolmens prove, the municipality was already settled in the Neolithic Age. In Roman times , a connecting route between the important Roman cities of Emerita Augusta ( Mérida ), Caesarobriga ( Talavera de la Reina ), Toletum ( Toledo ) and Caesaraugusta ( Saragossa ) led along the banks of the Tagus; a small Roman town called Augustobriga (later called Talavera la Vieja ) arose here . The Visigoths left hardly any traces. The region was overrun by the Arabs and their Moorish auxiliaries in the 8th century ; However, there is no archaeological evidence. Merida and the surrounding area were occupied by the Castilian - Leonese troops of Alfonso IX around 1230 . Recaptured from the hands of the Moors ( reconquista ) and gradually settled by Christians from the north and refugees from Al-Andalus . The place Bohonal probably emerged only in the late 15th century.

  • The single nave church of San Bartolomé dates from around 1500; its west facade is - apart from a simple bell gable (espadaña) - completely unadorned. The lower part of the masonry consists of precisely hewn granite stones ; the upper part is made of rubble stones. Two side portals lead into the nave , which is spanned by a new wooden ceiling. The clock tower was added in the 1920s.
  • In a road several are cattle troughs (abrevaderos) admitted.
