The 23rd Selecția Națională took place on February 17, 2019 and was the Romanian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv ( Israel ).

format

concept

Unlike the large-scale preliminary decision in the previous year , only 24 participants should take part in the preliminary decision in 2019. These were divided into two semifinals, which took place in January and February 2018. According to reports from the Romanian media, the semi-finals will again take place in different locations in Romania. In the semifinals, a jury will then determine up to five finalists and the televoting will determine one further finalist. TVR also retains the right to award a wildcard for the final. In the end, a maximum of 13 performers will take part in the final. There the winner will then be decided by 50% televoting and 50% by an international jury. If there is a tie for the winner, the international jury will decide the winner. It will be the first time that an international jury will be used at the Selecția Națională.

Choice of contribution

From November 9, 2018 to December 10, 2018, contributions could be submitted on the TVR website. There was only the rule that the submitted contributions should comply with the song contest rules.

On December 13, 2018, TVR announced that they had received 126 songs.

Attendees

The winner of the Romanian preliminary rounds: Ester Peony

On December 20, 2018, TVR presented the 24 participants to the public. These were selected by the following jury:

  • George Balint - Journalist (Realitatea Muzicală)
  • Felix Crainicu (Radio România)
  • Horea Ghibuțiu - music journalist (unsitedemuzica.ro)
  • Bogdan Miu - Radio program planner and journalist (DigiFM)
  • Bogdan Pavlică (Radio România)
  • Răzvan Popescu (Radio Zu)
  • Andreea Remețan - Radio Program Planner (Virgin Radio)
  • Gabriel Scîrlet - Music Director (TVR)
  • Oliver Simionescu - DJ Olix (Kiss FM)
  • Liana Stanciu - Journalist (TVR)
  • Dragoș Vulgaris - Music Journalist (ProFm & Chill FM)

Nicola , who represented Romania in 2003 , was one of the 24 participants .

Dan Bittman , who represented Romania for the first time on her debut in 1994 , was originally supposed to take part in the preliminary round. On January 1, 2019, however, he announced that he would not be in Romania at the time of the semi-finals and would therefore withdraw from the competition.

On January 11, 2019, TVR announced that they had given two wildcards, so that actually 25 participants would have competed in 2019.

Originally, MIHAI , who represented Romania at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest , was also supposed to take part . On January 13, 2019, however, he announced via Facebook that he would withdraw from the Selecția Națională 2019. The reason he gave was that he no longer trusted the objectivity of the organizers after they had given two wildcards, although originally only one should be given. MIHAI took part in the Selecția Națională as a solo artist in 2006, 2016, 2017 and 2018 and will therefore not take part in it for the first time since 2015. The singer Xandra also withdrew her participation. In 2019, a total of 23 performers will take part.
