The Seltenbach flows into the Main (background) |
The Seltenbach is an approximately three-kilometer-long right tributary of the Main near Klingenberg am Main in the Miltenberg district in the Bavarian Spessart .
geography
course
The Seltenbach rises west of Schmachtenberg between the Eicher (313 m) and the Bischberg (320 m) on the district road MIL 2. Shortly after its source, it enters a deeply cut valley, the Seltenbach Gorge . At the old clay works , which was closed in 2011 , the Rauschengraben flowing down from Mechenhard joins it from the right . The Seltenbach runs through the Seltenbach Gorge, which lies below the Clingenburg and runs to the west, and is crossed by around 15 wooden bridges. After a large sandstone bridge spanned it, it reached the town of Klingenberg, where it was passed under the 2309 state road . Below the Main Bridge , it flows into the Main near the school .

geology
Seltenbach Gorge

The Seltenbach Gorge east of Klingenberg am Main is a narrow notch valley . This so-called blade gave the old Clingenburg and later the town of Klingenberg its name. In the gorge , red, yellow and white striped rocks from the time of the Middle Buntsandstein are exposed.
The oldest layers of this red sandstone were formed about 250 million years ago through fluvial sedimentation , when the widely diversified primeval river systems deposited sand, clay and rubble carried along during floods. This material comes mainly from the high areas such as the Vindelician Land . The inclined and cross stratifications in the sandstone cliffs testify to the alternating flow directions of the primary rivers.
About two million years ago, in the Pleistocene ( Ice Age ), the Main cut into the flat landscape. As a result, the side tributaries such as the Seltenbach dug themselves in, creating steep gorges. The particularly resistant rock layers were exposed and eroded by the water .
The Seltenbach Gorge was designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as geotope 676R003 (see list of geotopes in the Miltenberg district ) and added to the list of the most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria in May 2011 . A similar red sandstone blade in the region is the Röttbach gorge near Kreuzwertheim.
biology
Newts and fire salamanders live on the Seltenbach . The deciduous trees in the gorge are covered with moss and ivy .
