Sergei

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sergei , also Sergej , less often Sergeij , Sergey and Sergeji (Russian: Сергей ), is a Russian male given name of Etruscan-Latin origin, derived from Sergius . In French it occurs as Serge , in Italian and Spanish as Sergio , in Portuguese as Sérgio , in Catalan as Sergi , in Romanian as Sergiu , in Serbian as Srđan (ser .: Срђан ), in Ukrainian as Serhij (ukr. Сергій ) and in Belarusian as Sjarhej (Belarus. Сяргей ). In Russian, the popular diminutive form Serjoscha (Серёжа) is also common (for example the son of Anna Karenina ), but not as a separate first name. There is no known feminine form of the name.

A German form is not known. Actually of Etruscan origin, the name went into the Latin language and meant there from the family of the Sergians . In the English-speaking world, the name is also not known in an English form, but it is quite common in emigrant families (for example in the USA).

As a Russian patronymic , the name for boys is Sergejewitsch (Сергеевич), for girls Sergejewna (Сергеевна). And as a common Russian surname, Sergeyev (Сергеев) - in the male form - and Sergejewa (Сергеева) - in the female form.
