Sergei Evgenjewitsch Voronow ( Russian Сергей Евгеньевич Воронов ; English Sergei Voronov ; born October 3, 1987 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) is a Russian figure skater who starts in a single run .
Career
In 1991, Voronov began figure skating. Two years later, at the age of five, he broke his collarbone in a fall on the ice and his parents wanted him to stop figure skating, but Voronov prevailed and carried on. After his then coach Rafael Harutjunjan left Russia, Voronov went to Saint Petersburg to train there in 2002 . First he trained with Galina Kaschina , then with Alexei Urmanow , the 1994 Olympic champion and Nikolai Morosow . He is now trained by Eteri Tutberidze and Sergei Dudakow . His choreographer is Alexander Schulin .
In 2005 Voronov was nominated for the first time by the Russian Ice Skating Federation for the Junior World Championships . However, he had to withdraw his start after the qualifying round due to an injury. The next year he was nominated again and finished second behind Takahiko Kozuka .
After Voronov had finished third at the Junior World Championships in 2007, he was nominated for the World Championships in Tokyo due to disappointing performance by Russian figure skaters at the European Championships . There he finished 19th and was therefore the best Russian.
In the following season he was able to take second place in the Trophée Eric Bompard after he had not been able to compete at Skate Canada a week earlier due to an injury . In January 2008 he was superior with more than 20 points ahead of Russian champions over Andrei Lutai and the defending champion Andrei Grjasew . At the European Championship of the same year he finished sixth after the short program, but was able to improve in the freestyle, showed the third-best freestyle of the competition and ended up fourth. At the World Cup in Sweden Gothenburg he finished after the short program a disappointing 15th place, but struggled the competition on the 7th place in the overall standings with the fourth best long program before and assured the Russian Federation as two starting positions for the next World Championships.
The start of the 2008/09 season was rather disappointing for Voronov, with a 6th place at Skate Canada and a 7th place at the Cup of Russia . In response to this, he switched his short program between the Grand Prix series and the Russian championships . Voronov won the Russian championships by almost 32 points. But neither at the World Cup nor at the European Championship 2009 he was able to build on the performance of the previous year, he finished 13th and 9th place respectively.
In the following season, Voronov went as the Russian runner-up after Yevgeny Pljuschtschenko had returned. At the European Championships , Woronov disappointed again as 14th and the Russian Federation decided to take Artyom Borodulin to the Olympic Games in his place . Since Pljuschtschenko did not take part in the following World Cup, Voronov moved up and, like at the European Championships, finished 14th. Voronow ended the collaboration with Alexei Urmanow after this season and switched to Nikolai Morosow .
After being eliminated from his Grand Prix competitions due to injury, Voronov missed the podium in the Russian championship in fourth and thus missed the qualification for the 2011 World and European Championships.
With third place at the Russian championships, Voronov was able to qualify for the European and World Championships again in 2012. There he could not convince again with the 10th or 17th place.
In 2014 Voronov won his first ever medal at the European Championships with silver at the European Championships in Budapest . He achieved personal best points in both segments as well as the overall performance, in which he came to 252.55 points. Despite this performance, he did not take part in the Olympic Games in Sochi or the World Cup.
In the 2014/15 season, Voronov reached the podium for the first time in his career in both competitions of the Grand Prix series in which he took part. He finished both the Cup of Russia and the NHK Trophy in silver and qualified for the Grand Prix final for the first time in his career . There he immediately won his first medal with bronze. It was the first medal in this competition for the Russian Federation in ten years.
