Sergio Otoniel Contreras Navia

Sergio Otoniel Contreras Navia (born April 27, 1926 in Valparaíso ; † January 5, 2019 ) was Bishop of Temuco .

Life

Sergio Otoniel Contreras Navia was ordained a priest on September 21, 1957 and was incardinated in the clergy of the diocese of Valparaíso .

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of San Carlos de Ancud on November 21, 1966 . The Archbishop ad personam of Valparaíso, Emilio Tagle Covarrubias , donated him episcopal ordination on December 27th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were José Manuel Santos Ascarza OCD , Bishop of Valdivia , and Gabriel Larraín Valdivieso , Auxiliary Bishop in Santiago de Chile .

On January 25, 1974, he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Concepción and titular bishop of Semta . On December 23, 1977 he was by Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Temuco and put into office on January 15 of the following year. On April 29, 1995 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Valdivia by Pope John Paul II and resigned from this office on September 8 of the next year. On September 21, 2001, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. From 2003 to 2006 he was President of Caritas in Chile.

Sergio Contreras Navia had lived in a nursing home since 2009, where he died in early 2019 after a long illness.
