Seweryn Leopold Obst (born December 29, 1847 in Nyschnij Bereziv in today's Kosiv district , Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast ; † January 2, 1917 in Lemberg ) was a Polish painter, graphic artist and ethnographer whose main interests were the Hutsul land and its inhabitants, the Hutsuls , was true.

Life

He attended primary school in Yabluniv ( Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast ), then secondary schools in Ivano-Frankivsk , Wadowice and Snjatyn .

From 1865 to 1871 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Karl Mayer , Carl Wurzinger , Karl von Blaas and Eduard Engerth . In Vienna he met the Polish painter Artur Grottger , with whom he studied at Christian Ruben's master school.

Back in Galicia in 1874, he took up portrait painting. During a short stay in Krakow he made friends with Witold Pruszkowski . He settled in Shabye and Yaremche in the Hutsul country, where he dealt with ethnographic research into Hucul folk art. He painted the Hutsuls in their national costumes. He created an important collection of the products of Hutsul folk art and published several albums with the drawings of these exhibits, among others. a. Wyroby metalowe włościan na Rusi - Metalwork of Ruthenian peasants - Ouvrages en metaux des paysans ruthéniens - Металеві вироби селян на Русі (1882) and Wzory przemysłu domowego włościan peasant industry - Ornamique peasant industry Вироścian na Rusuthénique - Oruthique peasant industry of the Rusuthen Вироścian de Rusuthiens промислу домашного на Русі (1889).

In 1883 Seweryn Obst settled in Lviv and founded a studio on Sakramentek Street. He also worked as a lecturer at the Lviv Art Academy.

He participated in many art exhibitions, including a. in Lviv, Warsaw , Krakow, Kolomyja , Ternopil , Rzeszów and London . In March 1912 his anniversary exhibition was opened in Lviv.

From 1910 he lived in the old people's home for artists of the R. Doms Foundation in Lemberg. He was buried in the Lychakiv Cemetery .
