Summer night comedy Rosenburg (until 2014 Shakespeare on the Rosenburg ) is the name of a theater festival that takes place annually in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria and primarily plays plays by William Shakespeare . The festival tent is located on the grounds of the Rosenburg , a renaissance castle that is located in Rosenburg in the Kamptal Nature Park .

The festival

Alexander Waechter directed the festival from 2004 to 2014. The performances take place in July and August. Every year over 10,000 spectators come to the Rosenburg to find a unique ambience and a magnificent backdrop for Shakespeare's works. From the beginning, the festival has also been a member of the Lower Austria Theater Festival . At the end of 2014, Alexander Waechter handed over the management to Nina Blum , who renamed the festival the Rosenburg Summer Night Comedy .

The premiere of Jean Poiret's A Cage Full of Fools , planned for 2020, has been postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

The stage

The covered arena stage was designed by François Valentiny . The “theater-in-the-round”, which is rare for Austria, is the trademark of Shakespeare's mediation at the Rosenburg. There are only seven rows of seats, so that despite the large number of spectators (856 seats), the intimacy of a small theater with great proximity to the actors is offered.

The program

Every year an ensemble of young actors shows a different major work by the great English playwright in a fresh interpretation. 2013 is an exception with a performance composed of several pieces.
