history
The association was founded at the end of 1993 by the “Working Group of Directors of the Lower Austrian Theater Summer” - including such renowned actors as Elfriede Ott , Felix Dvorak and Jürgen Wilke .
From the first season in 1994, the club was originally called the “Association of Directors of the Lower Austrian Theater Summer”, but in 1996 it was renamed to the more concise name “Theaterfest Niederösterreich”.
In the 26 summer seasons from 1994 to 2019, over 5.3 million visitors were counted, i.e. an average of around 200,000 visitors a year.
The club chairman was Peter Loidolt , director of the Reichenau Festival from 1994 to 2009 ; Werner Auer , director of the Felsenbühne Staatz, has been chairman of the Lower Austria Theater Festival since the 2010 season .
Many of the performances planned for 2020 have been postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
