history

Na'ama Bay in 1984

Sharm el-Sheikh is recorded on nautical charts for the first time in 1762. Until the 1980s, the city was a fishing village with around 100 inhabitants, and tourism grew by leaps and bounds. In recent years, Sharm el-Sheikh has repeatedly been the meeting place for international delegations to settle the Middle East conflict .

Sharm El Sheikh was the scene of several armed conflicts between the 1950s and the late 1970s. In 1955 the area was occupied in the course of the Suez Crisis and returned to Egypt the following year.

1967–1982 the settlement was occupied by Israel after the Six Day War.

On the night of July 22nd to 23rd, 2005, the city was the target of terrorist attacks . There were three bomb explosions in the city and nearby Naama Bay, killing at least 88 people and injuring well over 200, according to Egyptian Health Minister Mohamed Awad Tageddin . In March 2011, a memo surfaced on the Internet according to which the attacks were commissioned by the Egyptian security service and not by the previously unknown split from the terrorist network al-Qaeda , which had claimed responsibility for the attacks.

On October 31, 2015, a Russian passenger plane, Kogalymavia flight 9268 , crashed over the Sinai after taking off from Sharm El Sheikh Airport . An explosive device on board was identified as the cause of the crash.

tourism

Sharm El Sheikh has developed into one of the most popular and expensive seaside resorts in Egypt. The city is economically completely geared towards tourism. Numerous restaurants, markets, discos, golf clubs, international hotels and fast food branches have settled in town. In the suburb of Naama Bay (Arabicنعمة, DMG Naʿma ) there are several casinos. The relative freedom of movement and the legalization of gambling lead to severe criticism within Egypt and conservative circles are demanding respect for Islamic-Arab traditions.

There are several important diving areas along the coast in front of and near Sharm el-Sheikh . The numerous coral reefs are appreciated by divers. The destination is popular not least because of the good water quality and the pleasantly high air and water temperatures. In order to protect the sensitive ecosystem in the Red Sea, the Ras Mohammed National Park was set up on the southernmost tip of the Sinai Peninsula near Sharm el Sheikh , which can only be entered with official permission. From Sharm el-Sheikh, numerous more remote dive sites are regularly visited by submersibles, such as the Thistlegorm wreck, which is about 40 km to the west and is probably the best known and most popular wreck in the Red Sea.

Due to the rapid growth of the resort, the population consists mainly of newcomers from other regions of Egypt. Several mosques, some of which are still under construction, and a Coptic Orthodox Church of All Saints serve their needs . The latter was built from 1902 to 1908 with the help of private donations. In the interior it shows picturesque jewelry in conventional, realistic imagery as well as similarly designed glass windows.

On December 1, 2010, four people, three Russians and one Ukrainian national, were attacked and injured by a shark. Five days later, an elderly German tourist was killed by a shark in the Gulf of Aqaba. The shark had bitten off the 71-year-old retiree's arm and leg, causing her to bleed to death. Two sharks were later caught, but it is believed that it was not the attacker. A year earlier, a French tourist was killed by a shark in the Red Sea.

traffic

Road connections and a regular bus service exist u. a. to Eilat , Nuweiba , Dahab, Cairo, Alexandria and Suez .

There are regular ferry connections from the city's port to Hurghada and Aqaba , and cruise ships dock regularly.

With more than five million passengers (2006), Sharm el-Sheikh international airport ranks second in Egypt after Cairo. The airport, which opened in 1968, was originally an Israeli military airfield , which, after the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt, was given its present-day civil character with the return of Sinai to Egypt. In May 2007 a second terminal was opened with an annual capacity of eight million passengers.

There is no public transport network . Local transport is handled by private minibuses; Tourists use taxis, rental cars or shuttle buses that are provided by large hotels.

Sports

The three- cushion World Cup season has been concluded in Egypt in December since 2006, and in Sharm el-Sheikh for the first time in 2019 . After the last tournament, the overall winner for the year will also be chosen there.
