Shirazette Tinnin (* in North Carolina ) is an American jazz musician ( drums , percussion ).

Live and act

Tinnin grew up in Burlington, North Carolina , where her parents sang in gospel choirs. Then she studied at the Appalachian State University , then she completed from 2005 the master's degree in percussion and jazz education at Northern Illinois University with Ronald Carter ; she also had private lessons a. a. with Cindy Blackman , Lewis Nash , Terri Lyne Carrington , Allison Miller . In 2008 Shirazette won the Sisters in Jazz Competition of the International Association of Jazz Educators .

During her master's degree she worked in the Chicago jazz scene; In 2008 she taught at Columbia College there . In 2009 she moved to New York City. There she became a member of Gabriel Alegria's Afro-Peruvian Sextet and worked with Alicia Keys , Tom Browne and Hugh Masekela . In Tia Fuller's band , she performed at Umbria Jazz and Moldejazz . In 2013 she recorded her debut album Humility: Purity of My Soul ; In addition, the Christmas album How the Groove Stole Christmas was created with Rachel Eckroth and Willerm Delisfort . Her polyrhythmic playing is influenced by Elvin Jones ' work in the John Coltrane Quartet .
