Shoshoni is a town in Fremont County in the US state of Wyoming .
location
Shoshoni is located east of the south end of Boysen Reservoir at an altitude of 1,476 meters, about 70 kilometers northeast of County Seat Lander . The US highways 20 and 26, which run the same distance from Casper to this point, are shared here. The US Highway 20 leads from here to the north, then turn west to Yellowstone National Park off of US Highway 26 into predominantly west to Grand Teton National Park .
The city has an area of 9.28 km², excluding land.
history
Shoshoni was founded in 1905. The population rose rapidly and was soon around 2000. In 1907, much of the city burned down. In 1908, Asmus Boysen built the first Boysen dam in the Wind River valley , the power station of which supplied the city with electricity until 1925. The current dam was not built until 1952.
1905–1906, the entrepreneur Charles Henry King, grandfather of future President Gerald Ford , built the CH King Company and First National Bank Building in Shoshoni , which is one of the oldest buildings in Shoshoni and was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 (NRHP- No. 94001135).
The city is named after the Eastern Shoshone , who previously settled here and are now located in the Wind River Indian Reservation .
Demographics
According to the United States Census 2010 , Shoshoni had a population of 649, including 331 men and 318 women. 181 residents were under 20 years old, 88 were 65 or older.
